LEWISTOWN - Dale Stiles Thompson, 93, passed away on Oct. 7, 2008, at the Central Montana Medical Center following a short illness. He was born Jan. 12, 1915.
Dale and his wife, Betty (Blaylock) were longtime residents of Arlington, Va. (Washington, D.C.) He was a native of Woolsey, S.D., and graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. He went on to be an accountant with Price, Waterhouse and Company in St. Louis, Mo., from
1937 until he received an appointment as a special agent with the FBI in 1940. He served at offices at Richmond, Va., Louisville, Ky., Detroit and at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
In 1952, he became a business accountant with the Renegotiation Board, working on fraud cases. In 1955, he was appointed Special Assistant to the Secretary for Inspection, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and later established an internal audit program for the Department of H.E.W. He served as Director of General Services for that department from 1956 until he retired in 1971. From 1973 until 1978, he did investigative and accounting work for U.S. and foreign private and government clients. In 1973 he headed the investigative team for the sub-committee of the Government Operations Committee, U.S. House of Representatives, during its investigation of government expenditures on President Nixon's California and Florida homes.
After retirement, Dale traveled with his wife, Betty, to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada and Europe. He was very active in the affairs of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, having served as an officer in the Washington, D.C., chapter and at the National Headquarters. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson attended 22 national conventions of the society.
In 1984, Mr. Thompson was honored by Theta-Lambda Zeta Chapter of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity as a distinguished alumnus. He was a member of Arlington Forest United Methodist Church and Belle Haven Country Club.
In 2002, Dale and Betty moved to Billings and resided at Mission Ridge, a senior living community, until the time of Betty's death in February 2008. At that time, Dale moved to Lewistown and resided at "The Villa" until his recent illness and passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Thompson and Veda (Stiles) Thompson, and all of his siblings: Arthur, Robert and Margaret. His beloved wife, Betty, also preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 2008.
He is survived by two children, Anne Marie Brown (Dwight) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dr. Frank R. Thompson (Patricia) of Lewistown; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at a later date, graveside, at the Calvary Cemetery in Lewistown.
