BILLINGS, MT - Daniel Peterson, lovingly known as Danny by his family and "Dirty Dan" by his railroad coworkers, passed away unexpectedly in the line of duty on Sunday, October 19, 2025, around 9:40 a.m., in Columbus, Montana, at the age of 52. A resident of Billings, Montana, Dan was born in Winfield, Illinois, and graduated from Howell High School in Michigan before earning his degree in Theology from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois.
Dan's professional journey reflected his hardworking spirit and versatility. He worked at IMS Productions in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and held other positions in Michigan before becoming a Wind Turbine Technician. He later found his true calling in the railroad industry, serving with DME, Canadian Pacific, MRL, and most recently, BNSF.
His coworkers will remember him for his dedication, humor, patience, and love for deep, meaningful conversations. A man of unwavering faith and quiet generosity, Dan's compassion extended far beyond his community. He supported over a dozen students in the Philippines through college, giving them the opportunity to pursue higher education. Every year on his birthday, February 16, he and his beloved wife, Sheila, sponsored meals for underprivileged children in the Philippines? a reflection of his selfless and giving heart.
Known for his calm demeanor, thoughtful wisdom, and genuine care for others, Dan lived his life with patience, order, and purpose. He deeply cherished his 23 years of marriage to Sheila. Together, they traveled to all 50 states, relaxed in hot springs, and enjoyed peaceful evenings watching their favorite TV series. Their marriage was a true partnership filled with faith, love, laughter, and mutual respect.
To Sheila's family in the Philippines, Dan was more than a son-in-law; he was a source of strength, love, and guidance, a father figure in every sense of the word. His generosity and kindness touched countless lives both near and far.
