Duncan Burford Obituary

Dr. Duncan Burford died October 11, 2025 at the age of 92. Dr. Burford practiced medicine in the field of psychiatry in Billings for 45 years. He was respected by patients and colleagues alike. He was born in Monroe, Louisiana. He never totally lost his Southern drawl and he absolutely never lost his Southern charm.

Dr. Burford graduated from Louisiana State University in 1959 where he became a "Fighting Tiger" and passed that passion down to his children and grandchildren.

He completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. It was there that he met his first wife, Alice (Woldstad) Burford. They lived in New Orleans, starting their family there and moving to Billings in 1973 to be closer to Alice's family of origin. Alice died in 1992. In Billings Dr. Burford had a private practice, worked part-time at the Mental Health Center early in his career, and also taught at the physician assistant program at Rocky Mountain College. He also was a preceptor with the Riverstone Health Center Family Practice Residency Program. He especially enjoyed integrating psychiatry into the larger practice of medicine.

He married Vicki Niemantsverdriet in 1995 and they blended their families in Billings. Vicki and Duncan celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on January 1, 2025.

He is immediately survived by his wife Vicki; his daughter Kristin (Alan) Brester of Fort Smith; his son Drake (Ivy} of Livingston; his stepson Andrew (Jessie) Niemantsverdriet of Billings; his stepdaughter Sara (Brad) McDale of Bendigo, Australia. His five grandchildren Owen (18) and Beau (16) Niemantsverdriet, Devan (14) and Alice (11) Burford and Isla (4) McDale. He is also survived by his sister Liz McNew of Shreveport, Louisiana and was especially fond of his sister-in-law Jean Posusta of Billings, MT.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Alice.

A memorial gathering will be held at Dahl Funeral Home at 10 Yellowstone @ 2:00 p.m. Saturday October 18, 2025.

The family would be very comforted to hear any and all memories and stories you have to share with them. Condolences may be expressed at the Billings' Dahl Funeral Home website.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made towards a bench that will be constructed at the West Boulder Reserve, a place Duncan loved.

Dear Kristin and Drake,

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your dad. He was always the true Southern gentleman-gracious, wise, and deeply dedicated to his work as a psychiatrist. I will never forget the insight and compassion he offered our family during a time of crisis. Both your parents were so kind to us, and their warmth left a lasting impression.

Your father was more than a brilliant physician-he was a man who gave of himself tirelessly, with humility and heart. He had an amazing sense of humor. I´m sending love and holding your family in prayer.

With sympathy,

Ned and Laurie (Goldy) Elmer
