George Lester Balback, 67, of Billings, died on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, after a courageous, five-year battle with ALS (Lou Gerhig's disease).
George was born July 13, 1946, in Glendive, Mont., to Marvin (Slim) and Grace Balback; the second son of four children. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Roger C. Smith. George grew up on the family farm and enjoyed 4-H, riding horses, football, wrestling, band and student council.
George graduated Dawson High School in 1964 and attended college at Dawson County Junior College and then graduated from Montana State in Bozeman in 1968.
On Aug. 20, 1967, George married Lynn Ann Jones. They had one child, a daughter, Shauna. They later separated in 2012.
George served in the Army National Guard as a medic, before embarking on an extensive career in banking. After nearly 40 years in the banking industry, George's proudest achievements were his presidency with Western Bank, followed by a presidency and COO of Montana Bank.
George was very strong in his Methodist faith and enjoyed attending church, bible study groups and serving on various church boards.
His greatest passion was playing cowboy in his spare time.
George is preceded in death by his father and mother. Survivors include daughter Shauna O'Donnell (Ron) and grandsons Jordan, Rylan and Mason; brothers Marvin and Glade; and sister Darlene Hartse.
Memorial Service will be held at Smith Funeral Chapels, 925 S. 27th St., Billings, MT, on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1 p.m. Memorials can be made to Circle J Ranch, United Methodist Church Camp & Retreat Center, Ten Sleep, WY, 82442 or the ALS Association.
