MALTA - Gregory Norman Nelson, 42 years, loving and devoted husband, father and brother, drowned Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, following an accident while working cattle when his horse went down in a reservoir south of Malta.
Funeral services for Greg will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Dodson High School Gym, with burial in the Malta Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Malta is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Corliss Nelson of Malta; children, Leslie (Chad) Simonson of Great Falls, Buckshot Nelson of Missoula, Chancey Watson of Malta, Lacey Nelson of Malta; brother Roger Nelson of Malta; sisters, Cathy (Loren) Johnson of Malta and Cindy (Dan) Nelson of Loring; father in his heart, Richard (Darlene) Gilmore of Dodson; mother, Glenna (Jamie) Stevenson of Dodson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Nelson on July 31, 1960; and J. Yvonne Nelson on May 16, 1962.
Greg was born March 16, 1960, in Malta to John and Yvonne (Hoover) Nelson and was raised and educated in Malta and Dodson, graduating from Dodson High School in 1978. In 1980, he married Judy Phillips of Dodson. They had two children, Leslie and Buckshot, and later divorced. In 1991, Corliss Hurlbert began sharing in his life and they were married on Oct. 10, 1998, in Billings.
He was involved with ranching for most all his life, working for Richard Gilmore Ranch, Bill Murdock Ranch and for the past year, the Bruce Hould Ranch of Malta. He also worked for Phillips County Road District, Dateline Drilling, and Big Sky Horse Racing. Greg was a man of many talents: he was a traditional cowboy, dedicated horseman, amateur bareback rider, mechanic, and all-around handyman. Greg served on the Dodson School Board for nine years, was a member of the Dodson Volunteer Fire Department, Malta Saddle Club, and a 4-H Leader. Greg was an extremely generous man. He gave freely of his time and talent to anyone who was in need.
