Hans Carlson Obituary

WORDEN - Hans H. Carlson, born to Algot and Freida (Swanson) Carlson on April 24, 1923, in a little one-room log home in Ballantine, passed peacefully into Heaven on Oct. 4, 2010.

Hans grew up on the Huntley Project, quitting high school at grade 10 to help take care of the family farm. He raised Hereford cows, barley, corn and sugar beets until the time of his death. He met Ellen Nelson in 1948 and, on Aug. 25, 1949, they were united in marriage at the Little Flower Church Rectory. From this marriage, a daughter, Christina, was born. Hans was employed at the Billings Sugar Beet Factory, the Huntley Project Irrigation District and most memorably Huntley Project Schools, where he faithfully drove school and team bus for 43 years. He touched many lives in his 87 years, especially the lives of those students, athletes and coaches at HPHS.

Hans was known to many as "Chief" in his later years, a name given to him by his grandson, George. Although Hans' family is small, it is great and so is the family of friends he surrounded himself with. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our hero, our friend … YAH SURE!

He is preceded in death by his parents, Algot and Freida Carlson; brother Carl Carlson (Toni); sisters Anne Trippett (Clarence) and Margaret Carlson; an infant baby brother; and nephew Jim Trippett.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellen; his daughter, Christy Althoff and Alvin Lindeen; granddaughter Jena DeVries and her husband George; and his most precious great-grandchildren, Elle and Rylan, and step-great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Braden. His sister, Evelyn Liggett, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive him.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m., at Smith Funeral Chapel on South 27th Street in Billings. Interment will take place at Pleasantview Cemetery in Ballantine, followed by a luncheon gathering of family and friends at Homesteader Hall.

Special thanks to all of those at Rocky Mountain Hospice who took special care of Hans and his family during their time of need.

Donations can be made in Hans' name to the Huntley Project Athletic Fund, c/o Rita Huck, Worden, MT 59088; or to Rocky Mountain Hospice, 2110 Overland Ave., Suite 111, Billings, MT 59102.
