September 21, 1931 - September 28, 2025
Hank Rate passed away on September 28, 2025 at Brookdale Springmeadows Assisted Living in Bozeman with his daughters and granddaughters at his side.
An informal celebration of Hank and Dorine's lives will be held on Saturday, October 18 beginning at 2 pm at Yellowstone River Lodge Barn, 1037 US Highway 89 S., Gardiner, MT.

I met Hank while working for the Forest Service in Livingston around 2012 or so. We were both working on clearing-up some property boundaries associated with a project on the Yellowstone Ranger District. Hank was doing the survey work. As I worked with Hank over the years, in his calm and modest way, he would tell me stories of his time in the Forest Service when he and his family were young, and spoke to me with empathy and kindness for the sorts of challenges I dealt with at work. He too had been a District Ranger in Montana and knew the peaks and valleys of that territory. Whenever our paths would cross, I always enjoyed spending time with Hank and asking him his thoughts on matters of public land and national forests, and we both looked each other up when in the other´s neighborhood. We shared an appreciation of the challenges posed by trying to raise a family in Montana and for those that came with working for the U.S. Forest Service. He was one of those people in life that exuded a multitude of skills and talents, but he was quiet and humble. Of the thousands of people I met through the decades at work, Hank stands out as one of the kindest and most interesting. I am fortunate to have known him.
