Iris Lee Grewell Whittle, 84, passed away at St. Vincent's Hospital, Jan. 30, 2008, of natural causes. She was born near Joliet on Aug. 7, 1923, to Verna Hobbs Grewell and Robert N. Grewell. Iris graduated from Joliet High School in 1942, where she was a proud member of the State Champion Girl's Basketball team.
She married Ben W. Whittle on July 11, 1942, in Bremerton, Wash. Iris was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandparent, great-grandmother and aunt. Her sense of humor endeared her to many friends and neighbors who loved her. Iris was the owner and operator of The Iris Beauty Salon in Bozeman for several years before she was elected Gallatin County Treasurer; she held that title for three terms.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Foreman and her husband David, of Gillette, Wyo., and Linda Newblom and her husband Leonard of Beaufort, S.C.; two granddaughters, Haley Elliston and her husband Michael Schultz of Gillette and Sara Volkel of Bozeman; one great-grandson, Joshua Elliston of Gillette; two sisters, Lois Olson of Washington and Norma Morgan of Billings; one brother, Russell Grewell of Florida; and her loving companion, Tuffy. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, six sisters, four brothers and a grandson.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Interment to follow at the Rockvale Cemetery.
