Isaac Shane Obituary
CROW AGENCY — Isaac Shane, Sr., 81, of Crow Agency, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in the Sheridan Veterans Administration Hospital.
Daakaak-xuuxah "Spotted Bird" was born Oct. 29, 1921, in Crow Agency, a son of Howard DuShane and Margaret Spotted Horse. His paternal grandparents, Frank and Julia DuShane, raised him. He attended schools in Crow Agency and Hardin, graduating from Hardin High School in 1939. While in school, he actively participated in basketball and football. He later attended college for one year.
Isaac married Mary Agnes Big Lake in July of 1941 and the couple made their home in Crow Agency. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and received his Honorable Discharge in 1945, after serving in World War II.
He was a raised as a traditional Crow man, recognizing all cultural customs. His knowledge was often called upon, as he acted as an advisor for several administrations in Crow Tribal affairs. Because of his many trips to Washington, D.C., on behalf of the Tribe, he was responsible for the establishment of the Crow claim for the procurement of the Yellowtail Dam.
He was a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan, a child of the Big Lodge, Black Lodge District and the American Legion Post #135.
His parents; daughter, Rachel Shane; sister, Dorothy Shane; a brother, Phillip DuShane; and an adopted son, Earl Biss, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Agnes; his children, Rita Shane, Merci (Maynard) Hill, Isaac (Ora Mae) Shane, Jr., Zena (Thurlow) Birdinground, Mariam (Larney) Little Owl, all of Crow Agency, Howard (Vivian) Shane of Garryowen and Julia Penny Shane of Denver; his adopted children, Ed (Betty) Little Plume of Browning, Gilbert (Marie) Scott, Sr. of Hardin, John (Karen) Old Elk of New Mexico, Grant (Linda) Bulltail of Pryor and Jeff Hill of St. Xavier; his brothers, David (Adelia) Stewart, Sr., Donald Stewart, Sr., Reuben (Elizabeth) Stewart all of Crow Agency, John "Sonny" Pretty on Top and Alex (Deanne) LaForge, Sr. of Lodge Grass, Barney Old Coyote, Ben Pease and Oliver Pease of Billings, James Boy of Browning; and his special friend and brother, John (Eva) Hill, Sr. of Crow Agency; his sisters, Priscilla Gardner of Crow Agency, Wilma (Lawrence) Stands of Pryor, Beverly (Thomas) Pretty on Top of Reno Creek, Winona Plenty Hoops, Henrietta Pretty on Top, Bertha (Francis) Bear Claw, Mildred Old Crow, Joy (Paul) Matt, Sr., Pearl Hogan, Alma (Bill) Snell of Ft. Smith, Evelyn Old Elk, Ilene (Buckley) Pretty on Top and Adolaura Harris of Lodge Grass and Ferol Mae (Bill) Pease of Benteen; his grandchildren, Eugene Chico (Sally) Red Star, II, Michelle (Fred) Butler of Portland, Ore., Frankie (Brian) Phelps, Loretta Shane, Gregory Shane and Barbara Susan Stewart of Crow Agency, Shelly (Darren) Charges Strong of Benteen, Christopher (Athalia Rose) Shane and Richie Shane of Pryor and Mary Lou (Jess) Holds of Garryowen; his great-grandchildren, Renita (Josh) Medicine Horse, Candace Birdinground, Eugene Red Star, III, Lorna Little Owl, Dustin Little Owl, Yvonna Charges Strong, Brittney Phelps, Autumn Charges Strong, Jordan Phelps, Darren Charges Strong, Jr., Naumie DuShane, Karissa DuShane, Kai Taylor Red Star, Jessie Holds, Dominique Butler and Baby Boy Butler; his great-great-grandchildren, Shandon Medicine Horse, Jermaine Red Star and Rae Medicine Horse; as well as his extended families, including the Takes Horse, LaForge, Old Crow, Birdinground, Moccasin and Spotted Horse.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, in the Crow Tribal Multi-Purpose Building. Interment with military honors will follow in the Crow Agency Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with the arrangements.
