Yesterday

We honor the life of Jim Bennett as a distinguished banker whose 93 years were marked by integrity, wisdom and generosity. As a mentor, he guided others with patience and purpose, reminding us true success is measured not only in accomplishments but in the lives we touch. His legacy of professionalism and character will continue to inspire all who knew him. He was very good to me!

I sat next to Jim at a luncheon in Billings in the 1980s. He was still head of First Citizens bank at that time. He explained to me, just off the cuff, that the sale of War Bonds by the US government during WWII had nothing to do with paying for the war. It was done, he said, just to get that money out of circulation, as there were not enough goods and services to buy at that time anyway.

I had a nice time that day, as we all know that Jim was a very nice man. But his lesson on War Bonds stuck with me, to this day.
