Carter, age 56, of Glendive, passed peacefully from this life into the arms of his Savior, surrounded by his family, from a short but courageous battle with cancer. Jim passed away on Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and on Thursday, Nov. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. A Memory Service for family and friends will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Interment with military honors will be at 12 noon (CST) on Friday, Nov. 5, in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, N.D.
Jim was very giving, understanding, loving, kind, honest, thoughtful, hard-working and successful. Jim was born on Nov. 29, 1947, in Hettinger, N.D., to Charles and Marian (Carlson) Carter, the second of four children. Jim attended and graduated from Hettinger High School in 1965. He went on to Dickinson State College, where he was involved in wrestling and a member of Theta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Jim's college wrestling team was inducted into the Dickinson State College Hall of Fame in 1987. Jim enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard in 1966. He led a very distinguished career in the military, influenced numerous lives and retired as a Colonel in 1999. Jim started a long and successful career in banking and insurance with the First National Bank of Wibaux onto First Fidelity Bank, now Community First Bank of Glendive. Jim had worked at Community First for 21 years and was Vice President at the time of his passing. Jim was active in the community, sitting on and being very influential on over a dozen boards, including some very important ones to Jim, Fair for All, DCC Board of Trustees, Makoshika Promotions and the Eastern Montana Vets Foundation. Wrestling was always an important part of Jim's life. He was a wrestling MOA official for over 30 years and was active in the Glendive AAU program as well.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Jan M. (Moszer) Carter of Glendive; children, Barbara Jo "Barbie" of Dickinson, James Robert "J.R." of Glendive and children from a previous marriage, James Wayne "J.W." and Cody Beth. He is also survived by his parents, Charles and Marian Carter of Hettinger; brothers, Charles "Chuck" and his wife Carolyn Carter of Dickinson, and Jerry and his wife Joyce Carter of Hazen, N.D.; his sister, Candace Fitch of Hettinger; and numerous other family members and friends.
Jim was loved by all who knew him and his death will leave a huge void in so many lives. We wish to thank everyone for their continued prayers on our behalf.
Memorials are suggested to Jan Carter, 111 Juniper HC, Glendive, MT 59330, where a fund has been established in support of Jim's favorite organizations.
