Joel Harris Obituary

Joel S Harris

September 10, 1939 - April 29, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joel S. Harris of Columbus, Montana, who died peacefully on April 29, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born on September 10, 1939, Joel grew up in Laurel and lived a life rooted in family and community. In 1960, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Judy Gutschmidt. Joel graduated from the University of Montana and was a lifelong Griz fan. After graduating, Joel and Judy settled in Columbus and raised their family, building a life full of love and laughter. They shared 43 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2003.

Joel was a devoted father to Julie (Jim) Taylor, Jay (Lisa) Harris, and Jim (Christine) Harris. His pride and joy were his seven grandchildrenlovingly referred to as the "Super 7": Zach, Stewart (Katie), Amanda, Libby, Wilson (Hannah), Jill, and Jonah. He was thrilled to learn that his first great-grandchild is on the way, to be welcomed by Stewart and Katie this August.

A lifelong banker and trusted leader, Joel began working at Yellowstone Bank while still in high school. He dedicated his entire professional life to the family-owned bank, eventually serving as Chairman of the Board. His leadership and commitment were instrumental in the bank's success and its deep connection to the community.

In his younger years, Joel enjoyed golfing, bowling, and playing cards with his many friends. Later in life, he rarely missed morning coffee at Carol's (Uncle Sam's) or a glass of wine in the evening. He loved his many Corvettes, each bearing his lucky number "ELEVEN" on the license plate. What gave him the most pleasure, however, was following his grandkids' activities. Just as he had done with his children, he seldom missed an event. When there was a conflict, his rule was to attend the one that was geographically closest!

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy; his parents, B. Meyer and Bessie Harris; and his dear brother, Kent. "GDad" is survived by all of his children and grandchildren, as well as his sister-in-law, Linda Harris; niece and nephew, Steph and Brett Harris; and Julie's stepdaughter, Kodi Falls Down & her family.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Billings Clinicespecially Mary Hutchinsonfor their compassionate care during Joel's final days.

A private cremation and burial will be held. In lieu of flowers, those who feel so inclined may contribute to a memorial account at Yellowstone Bank. All proceeds will benefit Columbus High School athletics, an enduring tribute to Joel's love for his hometown and its young athletes.

Joel was a friend in high school. He was two years older. He had a wry sense of humor and was just a good guy. Blessings of peace to his family

Joel was a lifelong friend of some 80 plus years. Classmates in grade, jr hi, high school and college. Each time I would return to Laurel to visit we would get together for a beer, lunch or dinner with friends. He would talk about his children and grandchildren. Not many of us left from the group that grew up together in Laurel.
Remember him as a kind and generous friend.
