ST. XAVIER - Oliver "Sonny" Hugs, 74, of St. Xavier passed away Aug. 6, 2012, in St. Vincent Hospital.
Baaluxe' Itche' "Good Singer" was born March 17, 1938, in Crow Agency, a son of Oliver Hugs Sr. and Winona Yellowtail. He was raised and received his early education in the St. Xavier area, before making his home in Lodge Grass.
Sonny married Darlene Little Owl and later divorced. He married Carol Two Bulls and was later divorced. He remarried Darlene and the couple made their home in St. Xavier. He was a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan and was a child of the Greasy Mouth.
He enjoyed "parading," hunting, fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains with his family and friends. He had a "Green Thumb" and was known as a good a gardener. He worked for various construction companies, Crow Tribal Police, BIA Roads Dept., Crow Housing Authority as a carpenter and plumber and as a Tribal Game Warden. He was a master butcher and was proficient at nearly everything he tried.
His wife, daughter Jenny Bravo, son Gary, grandsons Cedric Leo Hugs Jr. and Courtney Jerome Hugs, great-grandson Joshua Yarlott; sister Linda Hugs, brothers, Dennis Hugs and Walter "Mickey" Stewart, his father Oliver Hugs, Sr.; mom and dad Hugh (Winona Yellowtail) Plenty Hoops and his grandparents, Robert (Clara) Spotted Horse Yellowtail preceded Sonny in death.
Survivors include his children Nadeen (Ken) DuMontier, Ray Bulltail, Sarah (Eymard) Left Hand, Cedric (Sherry), Oliver "Hovey," Robert (Margarita) Hugs Sr., Sandy (Daryl) Ward and Erlis (Johnny) Harjo Jr.; 38 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his aunts Anita Moran and Laura He Does It; his sisters Pansy and Sherri Hugs, Samantha (Curtis) Rides Horse and Merle Jean Harris; his brothers, Sonny Chandler, Kenneth (Pat) Toineeta, Franklin Plenty Hoops, Truman (Ella Beth) Jefferson Sr., Leland (Lorraine), Frank, William, Harvey (Cynthia), Jerome (Dora) and Dallas (Cheryl) Hugs; as well as his extended family including Philamine Old Coyote, Hazel Not Afraid and Nora (Dennis) Big Hair Sr.; his brothers Woodrow (Delphene) Good Striker, Gordon (Sandy) McDougall, Bob Plumber, Butch (Glenda) Jellis, Todd (Sandy) Buffalo, David Stewart Sr., Leo (Tammy) and Elias (Theo) Hugs, Tommy (Linda) and Ettinge (Harriet) Little Owl.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Crow Agency Spirit of Life Foursquare Church. Interment will follow in the St. Xavier Mission Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
