Peter Gaustad Obituary
January 24, 1936 - August 27, 2024
BILLINGS - Peter John Gaustad, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 27, 2024, at the age of 88.
Pete was born on January 24, 1936, in Billings, Mont., and raised in Absarokee, Mont., by Salvin "Red" and Cleone Gaustad. He graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Engineering and spent a distinguished career in the Army and later working with defense contractors at Eglin AFB, Fla. Pete was known for his dedication to his work and his passion for "helping others" following his retirement in 2005.
Pete's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his two children: Tim and Krista Gaustad; his two grandchildren: Tanner and Kayley (Minifie) Gaustad; and his two sisters: Mary (Jeffery) and Sharon (Swanson) Gaustad. He was a devoted sibling, father, and grandfather who took immense pride in his family's achievements and loved spending time with them.
In addition to his immediate family, Pete is remembered by his many friends and colleagues as a man of intellect and industriousness. He had a fondness for the Absarokee area and its history. He especially enjoyed hiking and spending time at Hell Roaring Falls and Mystic Lake. Pete also enjoyed photography and was known for his scenic photographs, most of which he shared with family and friends.
Pete is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ophelia, who passed away in 2008; his sister, Sybol (2013); and his brothers: Cebrun (2016) and Karl (2022). His legacy of love and strength will live on through his family and the countless lives he touched during his lifetime.
In accordance with Pete's wishes, there will be no formal memorial service. The family invites those who wish to honor his memory to donate to the March of Dimes, an organization Pete and Ophelia supported throughout their lives.
He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.
