Ralph Sappington Obituary

1952 – 2007

On March 24, 1952, the Lord gave us a great jazz musician, a loving husband, father and friend to all. Ralph Clayton Sappington was born in Oakland and lived in Los Angeles, and was raised by his grandparents. Ralph married the love of his life, Rhonda Jean Higgins on Oct., 20, 1974. They had three children together, Will, Becky and Jody. They lived in Los Angeles until 1991, when Ralph and Rhonda moved their family to Billings to be near Kathy Honaker when she left L.A. to return home. While in Billings, Ralph served in several churches in music ministry, including a decade at American Lutheran serving with Prs. Rafftery and Omland. Most recently, he was a music director at First United Methodist, serving with Pr. Tim Hathaway and was involved in several music and writing projects with his good friend A.J. Kalanick.
Ralph lent his musical talent to numerous projects and events, from community theater and fund-raising events, to individual recording projects and the production of children's stories that touched the lives of many. Ralph also helped shape the lives of hundreds of young musicians, through private lessons and as an adjunct instructor at RMC. But one of Ralph's greatest legacies lies within the musical ministry he performed in South Africa. In assisting with the foundation of the Athlone School of Music in Capetown, he traveled there in 1996 and 2000, taking with him a troop of musicians and teachers, and was planning another trip for the spring of 2008.
Ralph played and recorded with many people over the years, including The Righteous Brothers, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Don Ellis Band, Will Ferrell's father Mr. Lee, The Temptations, The Mills Brothers, Cartune, Carter James, Out of the Blue, Stan Getz, Stevie and the Saints, Glynfiddle, Ronnie Bedford Band and The Usual Band
Ralph was also an accomplished composer, having pursued his education at the California Institute of the Arts in musical composition and literature. Over the years he wrote in such diverse styles as jazz, rock, pop, country and big band and is a published liturgical composer. Recently he was honored with three compositions published in the Lutheran Book of Worship.
Many people often saw Ralph running on the streets of downtown Billings or having coffee at his favorite spot, Rock Creek Coffee Roasters, which he referred to as his office.
On May 12, 2007, with his family and friends at his side. The Lord called his faithful servant home.
Ralph is survived by his wife Rhonda Sappington; son, William Sappington (Kaia), daughter, Rebecca Stinger (Dorian); son, Jody Sappington; granddaughters, Parker Sappington Stinger and Evangeline Sappington; his sister in Christ, Katherine Honaker; sisters, Robin Sappington, Jody Rose Sappington; brother, Tim Sappington and Stepmother Yvonne Sappington. Ralph was preceded in death by his brother Ron Sappington.
Memorial services will be at First United Methodist Church, 2800 Fourth Ave. N., at 1:17 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16. Dahl Funeral Home is in charge.
Ralph, like most musicians, did not have health insurance. In lieu of flowers, his friends have requested that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution, may do so by making all contributions in the name of the "Ralph Sappington Memorial Fund". Contributions may be sent at this time to the:

You taught us about life! You taught us that true happiness is in helping others and that reaching your dreams is only as hard as making them possible and then living it. You taught us that life is not something to get through, but a continuous journey to enjoy. That love and laughter light the path for us to follow. You opened our eyes and our hearts and taught us that even in silence you can know love. You have provided us with great lessons. It is now our duty to light the path and share with others the gifts you shared with us.

I am so sorry to hear about Ralph. I know that he is one of those people in life who touches everyone he meets in some way. I knew Ralph from Community Band and from various activities around the community. I feel very blessed to have experienced his music and to have played his music. God Bless all of you...Ralph will be greatly missed but I am sure he is making beautiful music in heaven now.

Ralph 'ol Buddy,
Remember Band at Morningside High School and the way we'd get in trouble with Mr. Green? I will always remember your comments (always on point!), your budding talent (way more than the rest of us) and your smile. You might have been a couple of years younger than us "hip guys" but I know we all respected your abilities. I got out the yearbooks from 1968 and 1967 and looked at the pictures from the music department, I value those memories. God speed my friend, may the "Big Band" in the sky swing with you and your axe. Aloha Oi Hana Ho

Ralph was bass player and trumpeter in Cartune and I was girl singer. He was a great addition to the band. (He was our second bass player). He gave the band an edgier sound and his humour was right in sync with the rest of ours. Ask me about the trumpet prank.

Ralph had three loves in his life: God, his family and music. There was no doubt that his life revolved around all three.

May God bring Peace, Joy and Love in your memories of him. He was one of a kind.

Ralph is one person who really understood what God meant when he said to "make a joyful noise". He played trumpet at my wedding. Coming down the aisle to "Annie's Song" is a moment I'll never forget, in large part thanks to Ralph. Prayers for Rhonda and the rest of the family in this sorrowful time.

Ralph was my first friend in the Music Department at El Camino College, in 1971. We've been friends for 36 years, played together at school, at casuals, and in a band called CARTUNE. If "no man is a failure who has friends," Ralph was truly the richest man I know. Take five, pal.

Ralph,
What a joy to call you my friend. All the hours we worked together at Carpenter Music Store were special times. (We were the only guys who played Johnny Cash!)In my early days of teaching you showed my students the latest technology in music. But the biggest memory of mine was when you and Cathy drove all the way from Billings to LA to be in my wedding. What an honor to have you play the trumpet and sing. You will never be forgotten and I'll see you on the other side.
Blessings,
Dean

Ralph, A.J. and I worked side-by-side in the sound booth at the Blues Fest held each summer in downtown Billings. My favorite moment: The look of absolute glee and facination as we were experiencing "the worst guitar sound I have ever heard!" He was genuinely thrilled; I laughed and laughed. Thank you Ralph. Godspeed.

Ralph was one of few people in Billings that gave me a reason to live there. He was my composition teacher I learned so much from him. The main thing I learned was what you write as a composer is never right or wrong, its just you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I graduated from RMC in 2005 and although I was not part of the jazz band I did play in the orchestra band. I always enjoyed listening to the jazz band and seeing his love for music shine. I know he lives in the hearts of many.

I remember the first time that Ralph came into ECKROTH MUSIC. I had the feeling that he was very dedicated to music and what it could do for people. As I grew to know him more, it became very evident that his musical talents were a gift that he would share with anyone. His compositions for the community band were a joy to play. He will be missed beyond words.

I was so fortunate to work with Ralph during my growing-up years at BST. He and Kathy were my musical heroes. I am deeply saddened by this news, for the world has lost such a brilliant musician, and the void can never be filled. I am now teaching music to many students, and I hope to honor Ralph in all that I do. He gave us excellence, inspiration, and faith that through love and music, all things are indeed possible. God Bless you, Ralph and thank you for teaching me about the power of music. I offer my prayers to your family and friends.
