Richard was born to Harry and Anne (Connelly) Chambers on July 27, 1917, at the ranch house on the Marias River, in Shelby, Mont. He attended elementary and high school in Shelby and college at Montana State University. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1948. Richard served in the United States Naval Reserves during World War II. On June 30, 1948, he married Mary Eileen Kauth at Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Minneapolis. They moved to Glendive, where he began his medical career, as one of Glendive's finest family practice physicians. After 47 years of practicing medicine, Richard retired, but not from medicine. During his retirement he attended medical conferences and went on medical missions in Belize, Central America, and Cameroon, Africa.
His hobbies included raising quality quarter horses, hunting, reading and growing a vegetable garden with a vast array of edibles. It gave him great joy to share his produce with family and friends.
His lifelong Catholic faith was very important to him, and he was a member of Sacred Heart Parish for the past 64 years.
He died of complications of a glioblastoma brain tumor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Anne; his wife Mary; sister Joyclyn Davis and his brother-in-law Glenn Davis.
Richard is survived by his eight children, Stephen of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Kathleen (Randy) Wood of Snellville, Ga., Nancy (Dan) Halstead of Eugene, Ore., James (Kim) of Butte, Mont., Patricia of Eugene, MaryAnn (Keith) Owen of Chantilly, Va., Sue Ellen (John) Kompsie of Anchorage, Alaska, and Elizabeth of Scottsdale, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Jason (Michelle) Hanzlik, Ben (Elizabeth) Wood, Melissa and Emily Owen, Sarah, Robert and Matthew Kompsie; three great-grandchildren, Evan, Madison and Grant Wood; brother-in-law, John (Beverly) Kauth M.D. of Tulsa, Okla., with their six children and families.
