Robert Hagstrom Obituary

Robert S. Hagstrom, known as Bob or Doc, died of natural causes at his home on March 29, 2007.
Bob was born on Aug. 4, 1920, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of Ray Gunnar Hagstrom and Harriet Ross Hagstrom. His younger brother, Ted, was born two years later. Their father was the director of a multi-faceted ministry to the poor, Christ Mission Settlement. When Bob was 15, his brother died in an auto accident.
After college, Bob enrolled in medical school at Columbia Physicians & Surgeons in New York. While there, friends invited him on a blind date with a lovely nursing student from New Jersey, Evelyn Williams. His plans for bachelorhood evaporated.
Bob enlisted in the Navy and continued his medical training. He and Evy were married in 1946, when she finished nurses training. In 1949, their first son, Gunnar, was born in Cooperstown, N.Y. A daughter, Kris, was born soon afterward in Albuquerque, N.M. Bob left in 1950 for Korea, where he served in a M.A.S.H. unit in the Korean War. After returning, he continued his training in urology, and moved his family to Houston, where Kath and Biff were born.
Bob and Evy both wanted to raise their family in the West. When a colleague told them about a new clinic in Billings that needed a urologist, Bob took the train to Billings for a job interview. He liked the town and the Billings Clinic, and was given a position there. Evy bravely agreed to move with him to Montana in March of 1954. They always believed that God had led them to Billings. In 1956 the family moved to the Alkali Creek area, and two more sons were born: Dave and Dan.
Bob was beloved as a doctor because of his kindness and compassion, and his easy-going style. He was part of the Clinic for 31 years and did surgery at Deaconess Hospital. He was always committed to exercise, and began to jog in the early '60s. He kept track of his miles and had a real sense of accomplishment when he had jogged "around the world."
The underlying purpose of Bob's life was to help people know God personally through Jesus Christ. In 1960 he and other young men sponsored a week of meetings in Billings that sparked a deep spiritual interest among men who had not previously been aware of God's personal love for them. The week was a turning point for Bob and for many others; the impact continues today as people gather in small groups all over Billings for the purpose of following Jesus.
For the rest of their lives, Bob and Evy invested in others' lives. They did this through short-term medical missions; local ministries like Young Life, Community Leadership Development Inc. (CLDI), Americas Hand in Hand, and Peacemaker Ministries; Bible studies and small groups; the churches they were part of over the years; jail ministry; and hundreds of books they gave away with enthusiasm.
Bob was a great conversationalist with a wide range of interests, from missions to science to politics to heavy equipment. Over the years he mentored many young men who treasured their times with him.
When a new church, Hope Center, was planted in the South Side of Billings, Bob and Evy were enthusiastically involved. They were dedicated prayer supporters as the Church grew into an instrument of God's grace to the people in that neighborhood.
In 2004 Evy died. As he grieved, Bob's physical strength began to wane. He continued to focus on others, especially through faithful prayer for family, friends, and many other matters he cared about. His life continued to exemplify someone who fixed his eyes "on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith."
Bob was grateful for the gift of six children, 18 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The children are Gunnar Theodore (children: Heidi (husband: Doug Schrock; daughter: Abigail) and Josh (children: Jonathan, Angelica, and Grace)); Kristin Ann Hart (husband: Steven; son: David, who preceded Bob to Heaven); Kathryn Adams McRae of Jordan, Mont., (husband: Jack; children: Cora (husband: Ryan Best), Ian (wife: Zoey Berklund), Kristin, and Malcolm); Robert S. Jr. "Biff" (wife: Brenda; children: Katie, Ally, Rob, and Marianne); David Ross (wife: Cindy; children: Abram, Jhancet (sons: Jayden and Ezekiel), Tensy, and Hudson); and Daniel Fuller of Lakewood Colo., (children: Lucy, Andy, and Sally).
Bob's family warmly thanks the loving friends who were a joy to him and who continue to be a blessing to his children and their families.
A memorial service for Bob will be held at Faith Chapel (Shiloh Ave. and Broadwater in Billings) at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10. Memorials may be given to Community Leadership & Development Inc. (PO Box 3381, Billings, 59103) or another ministry of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of Dahl Funeral Chapel.

It was during the summer of 1972 that my husband and I met for the first time at a Sunday evening Bible Study at the home of Evie and Dr. Hagstrom. We got married one year later, and nearly 34 years later have three grown children. We are grateful for this ministry they have shared through our lives and others.
Our love and prayers for strength go out to their children during this exceedingly great loss.

To the Hagstrom Family:
My deepest sympathy in the loss of your father. I became acquainted the the Hagstroms through Doc's Young Life group which he counciled during the late 60's and early 70's here in Lavina. His influence and teachings were powerful tools to our teen-agers and I am forever grateful to both Doc and Evie and their family for their friendship.
Dr. Hagstrom spent his life ministering to folks all over the world, saving both bodies and souls
with his medical expertise and God's teachings. Now comes his well earned time for joy in Heaven with his loved ones. My prayers are with you all. Joan Krause

As you know, Bob was my close and dear friend. I hardly know where or how to start in saying how he has impacted my life. For all of the years the six of us met for weekly breakfasts to talk about our walk with our Lord Bob was the steady prod to look deeper. In every letter he sent since my moving from Billings he challenged me to support another great work someone was carrying on. He and Evy were a great image of what giving was all about. My memories of all he taught us by example are always freah. I won't be at the Memorial Service being held tomorrow and how sorry I am for the selfish decision I made to not travel, he deserved better than that. Of the six who were in our group there only remains Austin and myself. We are not up to carrying on his legacy but his great family is a walking example of all Bob and Evy were. Praise the Lord! We who walked with the two of them are ever greatful

Doc and Evie, together in paradise... What a beautiful picture. Our loss is certainly their gain.

Although I only met Doc and Evie briefly, my life has been significantly altered because of their obedience to God's call. In my 8 years as a follower of Christ many have poured into my life... Nelson's, McRae's, Lutton's, Hagstrom's, and countless others. A common thread through all of them is Doc Hagstrom. As I told Fred earlier, Doc poured into his life and he poured into mine. So, even I have the privilege and responsibility of carrying on his legacy.

I celebrate Bob's life lived well with you.

God Bless,

Thanks, Doc & Evie, for living out your love for Jesus in front of whomever crossed your paths. Brenda and I will be forever grateful for the example you showed us. The mystery of this walk with God became less confusing because of your mentorship to us over the last 35 to 40 years. Just watching you and your children has encouraged us that life is supposed to be lived this way.
Bless you all. We love you.

Just out of college in 1967 I was teaching in Glendive and our daughter was diagnosed with a kidney problem We were refered to Doc and over several surgeries Doc led us to Christ through YL leadership. Now with4 children and 20 grandchildren living for the Lord this legacy started with his witness.

Dr. Hagstrom was my doctor as a young girl. He removed one of my 3 kidneys in 1968. This was just one of a few procedures he did while I was a young girl. He prayed before each operation and led my parents to Jesus Christ. He is, and always will be, a wonderful inspiration to me and all of my family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of your families!

Dear Hagstroms - I picture my parents with your mom and their friends greeting your dad in heaven. I can just imagine the celebration. You were there when Vernon and Bettie had their home comings. So we know the joy when we know where our parents are but also the big spaces in our lives that they leave to re-fill. What blessings we all had in them and the times and faith our families shared. Praying for each of you.

To Doc's family:
Doc will be missed. It was a joy to get to know him better these past few years as he and Evy made Hope Center their home church. He always amazed me how he took an interest in my work and kept up on what I was doing with my life. Again, someone to be emulated in his humility and concern for others.

Dear Hagstrom Family. Thank you so much for sharing this saint with the world. Your dad meant so much to so many, including me. I last saw Doc and Evie at a Governor's Prayer Breakfast in Helena a few years back. I sat with them and deeply enjoyed the followship. Both were the lord's devoted servants and God's light shone through them (II Cor. 3: 17-18). My sympathies to you for your loss. My joy at their assuming their purchased places at the eternal prayer breakfast. Blessings. Bill Jensen

Deeply sorry for you loss. Dr. Hagstrom was a very remarkable person, with lots of love to share. He will be truly missed on this side. My mother Pinkey Scott held a special place in her heart for Doc and Evelyn Hagstrom. May God continue to bless your family through this difficult time. Much love to you Kris and Steve Hart, from everyone at All Nations Christian Fellowship Church. Kris, Leslie told me to tell you she is sorry for you loss and even more sorry she will not be able to attend any services, but wanted you to know that you are in her prayers and she loves you very much. Dear Kris, Steve and family of Doc Hagstrom,
Please accept our sincere condolences in the home going of your father. I remember the verse you claimed when David went to be with the Lord - Psalm 91:1 and I am once again praying that for your family. May the only shadow over this time be His! And on a personal level - you may not see them, but there will be lots of baseball caps at his memorial service, I'm just sure of it!

While I did not have the pleasure of knowing Dr. Hagstrom, I did go to college with Dave--and I truly believe that we are a product of our parents. Dave was a wonderful friend and I have many memories of his extraordinary friendship. My sympathies to all the family.

When I started working in Radiology at the Deaconess some 30+ years ago Dr. Hagstrom was on a pedestal in my mind.....not because he was a physician, but because he was such a kind a caring man. The world would be a much better place if there were more like him! God bless him and the entire Hagstrom family.

Dave, Cindy, and the rest of the Hagstrom family,
Doc was as you say, a very giving, humble man. I had the pleasure of knowing both he and Evy. What sweet and gentle souls. You should be proud to have had them as parents. Until we all meet again in Heaven, Vaya Con Dios.

The Hagstrom Family:
As I sit here thousands of miles away, I think that the family of Bob Hagstrom is much larger than what is listed in the obit.
His work was never done as he touched so many lives is as many different ways. He might have been a Doc but his healing powers went much deeper. He walked right into your heart and because of that, we who knew him are better people.
They tell me that angels come into our lives dressed in different ways. I drew from his faith in me and gave me more than just a purpose but a peace in doing what is right.
This man, who's life we celebrate, did not need to wear a angel star on his lapel.
I shall miss him. I will never forget his teachings. He never needed to use words.
Bob moves on to a greater reward but what what a trail he blazed. He left us a easy road to follow. No stone, no fancy plaque on our walls will be his memorial. It's alive today will live in our hearts forever.
God Bless you Hagstrom Clan. We rest in the the faith of our Living God and His promises. Bob will remain His faithful servant with greater horizens. Thanks be to God and his Son Jesus Christ.
