Ronald Zech Obituary
Ronald Earl Zech of Billings, fell asleep in Jesus surrounded by family at his residence, Butterfly Homes, where he was treated like family. He was born on May 29,1944 in Bismarck, N.D. He was the third of four children born to Chester and Dolores (nee Halsne) Zech. Ron spent his early childhood in the small town of Steele, N.D., in an extended family of farmers and blacksmiths. After elementary school he moved to Bismarck, graduating high school in 1962. He attended Dickinson State College and was awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Education.
Ron always had a positive outlook on life and loved to laugh and tell jokes. Although his marriage to Darlene did not work out, they were blessed with their sons Rako and Travis who became Ron's pride and joy. Ron worked as a teacher for many years, as well as a tire mechanic and car salesman, but he always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Many in Billings knew him and his sons as the Grass Guys for his lawn and weed care. He spent the last twenty-five years of his life with his best friend Bonnie Claussen, who was by his side through thick and thin. They shared the ups and downs of life together, and she made his life complete.
Ron enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, spending time outdoors, camping, and fishing. He especially loved to buy, sell, and fix up classic cars; especially his 1957 Chevy and 1965 Galaxie. He attended many a car show and especially loved the "Burn the Point parade" and watching races.
Ron made a point to help others and was active in his Lutheran Church. He joined the choir, the men's breakfast group, appeared as the Apostle John in a Last Supper play, and served in a prison ministry.
In his earlier years Ron struggled with alcohol. He had a moment of clarity and decided to get clean in 1991. He was very active in Alcoholics Anonymous as a friend and sponsor. He was a bright light for many in a dark spot.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dolores and Chester; and his brother, Jerry (and Jerry's wife Connie); and his brother-in-law, Tim Baltzer. He is survived by his sons, Rako (Melissa) Zech and their children, Samuel, Kara, Libby, Peter, Emma, and Luke; Travis (Amber) and their children, Noor and Janick; siblings, Joy Carol Brakken (Ed), Donna Baltzer; nephews, Tracy and Tim Zech (Jerry); nieces, Paige Dorsey (Carol), Zersha Fischer (Donna).
Friends are invited to bring classic cars to his funeral at Peace Lutheran Church, 1301 Avenue D, Billings MT, 59102 on October 2nd at 10 a.m. Private burial to be at Lavina Cemetery, 45 Cemetery Road, Lavina, MT 59046. Memorials in Ron's honor may be sent to Peace Lutheran Church.
