Steve was born in 1938 in Denver, Colo. He spent most of his growing up years in Green Mountain, Colo., where he developed a love for the outdoors and ranch life. He met and married, Frances Ruth Hindman, Frankie to those who knew her, in the fall of 1959 in Jackson, Wyo. After a few years of following jobs across the country the couple settled in Great Falls, Mont., to raise their children. In 1977, Steve, installed the first CT scanner in the State of Montana in the then Columbus Hospital of Great Falls. After the children had all graduated the couple again travel across the country following Biomedical contracts. Steve retired to Laurel in 2003 after the death of his beloved Frankie. He then spent a few years driving school bus in Billings.
He truly loved children and teens and felt a great connection to all kids. He also loved dogs and cats and considered them family. He especially loved Cocker Spaniels but all dogs and cats were special to him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Virginia McAtee of Colorado Springs, Colo.; in-laws, Frank and Ruth Hindman, of Crowheart, Wyo.; wife, Frankie (Hindman) McAtee; sister, Pat McAtee; brother-in-law, Jim Hindman, Bridger, Mont.; and Pepper, his last Cocker Spaniel.
He is survived by his siblings, Aileen McAtee, Wash., Donald McAtee, Texas, Jerry McAtee (Rose), New Jersey, and Mike McAtee; his in-laws, Bud Hindman (Mar-Lynn) of Crowheart, Wyo., Bonnie Franz of Casper, Wyo., Del Hindman (Susan) of Jackson, Wyo.; and his children, Keith McAtee (Krista), Kalispell, Mont., Teresa (Tere) Lehman (Jay), Roberts, Mont.; and daughter in-law, Deborah McAtee, Bozeman, Mont. He is also survived by his pseudo-adoptive daughter, Trish Kellinger (Bruce), Billings; 15 grandchildren, three great grandchildren; Wally, his chocolate Lab; and many other children that called him Grandpa Steve!
