CROW AGENCY - Stephen Corey Old Elk, 23, of Crow Agency, died Dec. 17, 2012, of injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident east of Hardin.
Annaakaaeewiishish "He who leads many horses" was born Aug. 6, 1989, in Crow Agency, a son of Janet Old Elk and Jeffrey Iron. His father died at an early age and his mother and his stepfather Shobe Little Light raised him. He received his early education in Big Horn County, later the Chemawa Indian School and graduated from Hardin High School in 2007. He currently was a student at Little Big Horn College.
He was a member of the Big Lodge Clan and was a child of the Greasy Mouth. He was known as a young man wise beyond his years. He was always humble and respectful. He loved to play basketball and lift weights. He was a strong believer in the Jesus Christ ministry. However, the joy of his life was his daughter and a niece Patty.
His father; grandparents George (Chood) Old Elk Jr., George (Evelyn) Old Elk Sr. and Andrew Old Elk, Garlon Williamson Sr., Lloyd Dawes Sr., Claude (Mary) Dawes Sr., Claude Dawes Jr., Joseph (Effie) Knows His Ground, John (Melinda) Half; aunts Crystal Little Light, Fairalee Williamson and Roberta Old Elk; uncles JoJo Pretty Paint, Arlo Dawes, Simon and Wesley Old Elk; brothers DeAllen Little Owl, Teddy Little Light Sr., Lance Iron, Todd and Alan Old Elk; and sisters Jazmin Rain Morning and Molly Smells preceded Stephen in death.
Survivors include his daughter Taisha; his mother Janet V. Old Elk; his stepfather Shobe Little Light III; his sisters, Trisha, DesiRae and BonaRae Iron, Francesca, Elizabeth and Evalina Little Light, Chelsey, Marny, Olanda, Jamie, Jonny, Ivy, Misty, Corrina and Flora Old Elk, Larissa Medicine Horse, Michelle Rides Horse, Jewel Stewart, Larissa Little Light and Amber Buffalo; his brothers, Aaron, Chris, OJ, Shawn, Porter and Ray Iron Jr., Aaron Wesley, Jongary, TJ, Lyle, JR, Lyle Wade, Bucky, Tristan, Elery, Harrison and Levi Old Elk Sr., Justin Brown, Larny (Pearl) Stewart, Juidici Williamson, Brian Pretty Weasel, Colt Little Owl, Joey Knows the Ground, Shobe Little Light IV, Victor (AJ) Bull Shows Jr., Arlington and Lewis Rides Horse; adopted parents, George "Porgey" (Gloria) Old Elk, Scott (Lauren) Medicine Horse, Maudine (Clive) Dust and Ray (Melva) Iron Sr.; his grandparents, Pansy Williamson, Ralph (Anita) Iron, Melvin (Elsie) Pretty Paint, Larry (Gwendolyn) Plain Bull, Dan (Carlene), John (Karen), Clayton (Georgianna), Walter (Colleen) and Larry (Carol) Old Elk; his aunts, Janice (Kerry) Stewart, Arlene Hawley, Jennifer Lovato, Sophie Ann Pretty On Top, Georgianna Old Elk, Lori Ann, Jeannie and Brenda Pretty Paint, Twila Old Chief, Verena Dust, Jana Jo Alden, Elizabeth Springfield, Mary Red Bird, Pauline Espinoza, Claudia Spotted Horse, Melvina, Patsy and Melinda Dawes, Amy Yellowtail, Shannon Routh and Julane Old Elk; his uncles, Mitchell and Robin Iron, Kenneth Knows His Gun, Garlon (Garla) Williamson Jr., Esley (Ivanna), Lyndon (Ann) and Lyle (Otelia) Old Elk, Leon (Cher) Old Elk-Stewart, Claude III (Berna), Marvin (Glenda), Max (Sophia), Dean (Nadine), Greg (Connie), Larson (Bonnie) and Llewellyn (Maurine) Dawes, Victor and Clyde Pretty Paint; his best friends, D'Angelo Diaz, Michael Wall, Maverick White Clay, Sean Pretty Weasel, DJ Tillman, Randall Jefferson, Scott Russell Jr., Abram Half, Chalan Medicine Top, Johnny (Nancy) Old Coyote, Christopher and Boliver Big Hair, Cody and Casey Leider; all of his Chemawa friends; as well as his extended family including the Old Elk, Dawes, Iron, Pretty Paint, Little Light, Knows the Ground, Blaine, Plenty Hawk, Left Hand, Gets Down Often, Pretty Weasel, Caufield, Bravo, Tushka, Bird in Ground, Plain Bull, Fighter, Moccasin, Snell and Walks families. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, in the Crow Agency Spirit of Life Foursquare Church. Interment will follow in the Crow Agency Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
