Steven Grotjohn Obituary

Steven Bryan Grotjohn age 68, passed suddenly, on March 19, 2024. He suffered from a sudden heart attack while at home in Billings.

Steve was born in Libby, MT on June 20, 1955 to Earl and Glen Grotjohn. He was the oldest of 6 children. Growing up Steve enjoyed playing baseball, camping, fishing, and hunting. He especially loved time spent at "The Ranch" with Bob Barnes. You could often find Steve caring for the animals, haying and riding his horse, Socks.

Steve graduated from Libby Sr. High in 1973. Immediately after graduation he began working for St. Regis Lumber Company. He continued in the lumber industry for the next 32 years.

While attending a friend's wedding, Steve met his California girl Rene Sterner. The next year they were married in San Jose, California on October 15, 1977. They chose to build their life together in Libby. After two short years, they were blessed with their first child, Katie, soon to be followed by Christopher and Bryan. He was so proud of his family and their home on Kootenai River Road which provided his children the opportunity to learn and enjoy the childhood he had experienced.

After the closure of the lumber mill, he and Rene moved to the Billings area to be closer to their children and grandchildren. While in Billings, Steve continued to work until his retirement in 2023. They purchased a camper and enjoyed following their family around the state to sporting events, fishing tournaments and family fun.

Steve is survived by his wife Rene'. Their marriage of 46 years served as an example of love and commitment to their daughter Katie (Wayne) of Laurel, Christopher of Belgrade, Bryan (Leslie) of Billings. Six grandchildren, Owen, Benjamin, Kenadi, Madelyn, Myles and Maycee. Brothers and sisters Tim Grotjohn, Kim Hays (Jim), Jeff Grotjohn (Ann), Kerri Connors (Dan) and Patrick Grotjohn.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Glen and his nephew Nathan Hays.

Funeral Services will be held on April 6th at 11:00 am at the Libby Memorial Center, 111 E Lincoln Blvd, Libby, MT, with a reception immediately following. Please come join the family to celebrate Steve's life.

One day when I was driving home from college, my old car had a blowout. Steve, whom I had never really talked to much in school, stopped to help me change my tire. I will never forget his kindness. A true gentleman.
