Armand Bauer, 75, passed away Dec. 12, 1999, in a local hospital. A service of celebration will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran church, Bismarck. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home.

Armand was born Nov. 29, 1924, at Zeeland, the son of Edward and Maria Bauer. Armand was raised on a farm near Zeeland. After high school, Armand was drafted and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944-1946, including tours aboard ships in the Pacific. He received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from North Dakota State University and his doctorate from Colorado State University in soil science. Armand married Elaine Levi, March 25, 1949, at Greenway, S.D.

Armand spent his entire professional career working on the problems of water and wheat and soil fertility; first with NDSU in Fargo, where he attained the title of professor, and then as a research scientist from 1976-1991 with the Great Plains Research Center near Mandan.

An active member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served his Lord as a church elder, choir member and through witness of his faith. Proud of his German-Russian heritage, Armand was very interested in geneology and was one of the founders of the Germans From Russia Heritage Society. He remained active in this organization all his life, including 25 years as editor of numerous society publications and translator of a book on Russian-German settlements in the United States.

Armand is survived by his wife, Elaine; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Candice and John Cox, Moorhead, Minn., Debra Bauer and her friend, Dave, Fargo, and Sydney and Gary Evans, Tucson, Ariz.; one son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Linda, Eden Prairie, Minn.; three sisters, Alma Levi, Fargo, Laura Jund and Irene Boschee, both of Zeeland; two brothers, Wildred, Bismarck, and Robert, Dickinson; and three grandchildren, Samuel Jordan, Columbus, Ohio, Cody Jordan, Moorhead, Minn., and Margaret Bauer, Eden Prairie, Minn.
