Barlow Mehlhaff Obituary

WISHEK -- Barlow Mehlhaff, 73, Wishek, died April 15, 2004, at the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 19, at First Baptist Church, Wishek. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Barlow Mehlhaff, son of Wallace and Pauline (Ehrman) Mehlhaff, was born Sept. 26, 1930, at Eureka, S.D. Barlow grew up and attended school in the Wishek area. He farmed with his family before entering the Armed Forces of the United States on Jan. 16, 1951, serving in the 188th Field Artillery Battalion of the 47th Infantry Division. Barlow was discharged from the service on Sept. 22, 1952, and returned to the Wishek area where he farmed and ranched with his family and learned carpentry from the Rev. Wahl.

Barlow was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wishek, where he served as chairman of ushers for many years and also enjoyed witnessing about his Lord. In the late 1960's, Barlow and his family would go to the Baptist Youth Camp at Crystal Spring, where he would enjoy giving boat rides. Barlow loved to do carpentry work fixing up his lake home and his daughter's home. Fishing was also a favored hobby of Barlows, especially ice fishing.

Barlow in survived by his wife, Stella; two daughters, Candace (Larry) Bruton, Keller, Texas, and Annette Mehlhaff, Bismarck (fiance, Ken Nickels, Nashua, Mont.); one brother, Harvey (Carol) Mehlhaff, Snoqualmie, Wash.; one sister, Jeanne (Rich) Bonander, Valley Springs, S.D.; and three grandchildren, Sara, Megan and Katie Bruton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
