Bertha was born Oct. 16, 1924, to John and Eleanore (Pfau) Frank in Mandan. Bertha married Nick Schmidt on June 4, 1946, in Flasher. She was an elementary school teacher in the rural schools in the St. Gertrude, Raleigh, Lark, Breien and Timmer areas. Bertha was a member of the Homemakers Club and Quilting Club, where she demonstrated her artistic talents in quilting. She also gave them to friends and family and donated them to the senior center. She also enjoyed painting and took classes to explore her talent. She was a weather observer/storm spotter and reporter for many years, along with being a census taker and 4-H leader.
When you visited Bertha, hospitality was important to her - you would never go hungry. She was a wonderful cook and large Sunday dinners were her specialty, which her family enjoyed. Nick and Bertha enjoyed traveling throughout the United States throughout their lives.
