Bob Henschel, former local roofing contractor, was born Robert John Henschel, Feb. 4, 1937, to Donald and Mary (Wetsel) Henschel in Princeton, Minn. Bob passed away at his home in Bismarck, on Feb. 17, 2017. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, followed by a 3 p.m. graveside committal service with military honors at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Bob and his family moved to Bismarck in 1949 where he graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1955. He then worked in the oil fields and for his father until his 1959 enlistment in the U.S. Army. An excellent marksman, Bob spent much of his military time on the U.S. Pistol Team in Germany, mustering out at Fort Lewis, Wash., in 1962. Always enchanted with wildlife, fishing and gardening, he chose to stay and make Washington his home. He lived and worked there as a roofer and roofing contractor until the early 1970s. While there, he was briefly married to Phyllis McDonald. Bob returned to Bismarck and assisted his parents in operating Henschel Roofing for several years, eventually purchasing and running the business until he retired.
In retirement, he was a serious gardener, beekeeper and birdwatcher. Knowing their habits and behaviors, he could spot and name hundreds of birds, especially raptors. He was an avid reader of nonfiction, especially history and all things military. Bob enjoyed the company of friends and family, always ready to share a tale or two...or three.
Bob is survived by his brother and sisters, Mary Anne and Jim Ulfers, Beach, Don Henschel and Jody Hopson, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Kathy and Armon Doll, Vancouver, Wash.; nine nieces and nephews; 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; and his cousin, Robert Lee Henschel.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two uncles; an aunt; and a great-nephew. He is greatly missed by all who loved him.
