Diane Weber Obituary

Diane J. Weber, 68, Bismarck, died Dec. 6, 2014. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the Bismarck Funeral Home, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. She has been cremated per her wishes.

Diane was born in Richardton, on April 28, 1946, to Frank and Magdalena (Fleckenstein) Schumacher. She was the ninth of 12 children and was raised on a farm south of Halliday.

Diane was proud of her education, which began at the Big Flat School, a rural elementary school. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Richardton, and from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. She completed German language studies at the University of Salzburg in Austria in 1969.

On Aug. 22, 1975, she married John Weber at St. Martin's Church in rural Dodge. They had two daughters, Nicole and Melissa, and the family lived in a home Diane and John designed and built south of Mitchell, S.D. Diane moved to Bismarck in 2000.

In her early career, Diane worked as a Bell Telephone operator and went on to teach German and English after college. In 1975, she moved to Mitchell for training as a clinical lab tech where she also met her husband, John. After working several years as a clinical lab tech, she returned to her career of teaching high school German and English. Following her retirement from teaching, she worked in a variety of cooking and catering positions.

Committed to service throughout her life, Diane joined the Peace Corps in 1970, working as a volunteer in Micronesia. In retirement, she enjoyed her volunteer work with "Talking Books" at the North Dakota State Library for a number of years. She held a deep interest in charting her family's genealogy, and her hobbies included reading, classical music, travel, sewing, needlework, gardening, playing piano, Tai Chi Chuh, and yoga.

Diane is survived by her daughters, Nicole (Victor) Sandoval, Maple Grove, Minn., and Melissa Weber, Chicago. She is also survived by eight sisters and brothers, Ann Schweitzer, White Bear Lake, Minn., Sister Johanna Schumacher, Watertown, S.D., Tony Schumacher, Halliday, Sister Francis Schumacher, Pierre, S.D., Marilyn Beach, Valley City, Charlotte Majic, Port Hope, Ontario, Judith Schumacher, Clearwater, Fla., and Duane Schumacher, Bismarck; along with aunts, uncles, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; her sisters, Eva Schuh and Theresa Schumacher; and her brother, Jim Schumacher.

The family has established a memorial fund with the Mitchell Technical Institute Foundation to endow a scholarship as companion to the scholarship established in her husband's name.
