Emily Haaland
Emily Haaland, 87, Bismarck, formerly of Carpio, died Dec. 3, 2006, at Edgewood Vista, Bismarck. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at Carpio Lutheran Church. Interment will be in First Lutheran Cemetery, Carpio.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Emily Clarice Irene Tudahl was born Nov. 16, 1919, the daughter of George and Dena (Bekkerus) Tudahl, Minot. She was raised on the Tudahl family farm one mile east and ½ mile north of Berthold. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold. She attended Berthold High School, where she played violin in the orchestra and graduated in 1936.
Emily was married to Harold Haaland on March 5, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold. They made their home on a farm located in Carpio Township, Ward County, west of Carpio. They lived and farmed there for 50 years.
Harold encouraged her to become a Carpio Township Assessor. She served in this capacity for five years. She also wrote about the news in Carpio for Kenmare News.
In 1992, they moved to Minot. In April 1997, they moved into Edgewood Vista, Minot. Harold passed away on May 15, 1997. Following her husband's death, she continued to reside in Minot until moving to Bismarck in 2000. She had resided at Edgewood Vista since.
She was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold, where she was very active. She was currently a member of Carpio Lutheran Church where she was very active in the ladies aid and choir. She was also a member of Carpio Senior Citizens, Carpio Homemakers Club and Moose Lodge, in Minot. Most recently she attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck.
She was active in the Berthold 4-H Club as a young adult and parent with her daughters. She enjoyed singing in the choirs, writing poetry and her life history.
Surviving family includes her daughters, Elsie Madsen and her husband, Peter, Arvada, Colo., Clarice Johnson, Austin, Texas, Harriet Klark and her husband, Noel Gray, Volcano Village, Hawaii, and Wanda Bye and her husband, Carl, Bismarck; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; and her brothers, Oscar, Donald, Gaylord and Carroll Tudahl.
Memorials are preferred to Carpio Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
