Harry Schmidt Obituary

Harry Edward Schmidt, 89, of Glen Ullin, North Dakota, passed away September 29, 2025. He was born May 3, 1936, in Elgin, North Dakota, to Edward and Ida Schmidt. He married Shirley June Moore on February 16, 1957, in Beardstown, Illinois.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Ida Schmidt, his wife Shirley, his brother Ervin Schmidt, and a son-in law Ernest (Bud) Rich.

Survivors include his children Sheryl Lynn (Arthur) Gagnon, Ronald Wayne (Cynthia) Schmidt, Sandra Lea (Bud) Rich, and Sheila Kay (Bernard) Krause; 11 grandchildren (Gary, Brian, Thomas, Marc, Michael, Christopher, Edward, Brittany, Steven, Meggan, and Sheldon); 16 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; his sisters Lyla Skaggs, Marilyn Tietz, and Scharlott Walter; and many much loved relatives and friends.

Harry was always a hard worker. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955. After his discharge, he was an automobile and diesel mechanic, then became a truck driver for many years. Later on, he was a bus driver for the Elgin Schools, and then a tour bus driver touring all over the United States. You could say he loved to drive.

Harry had many interests. He loved to play the accordion. He also liked to bowl, go fishing and hunting, and especially loved spending time with his family. He thoroughly enjoyed being a grandparent and a great grandparent, and was thrilled to welcome a fifth generation when he became a great great grandparent.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Farwest Rotary Community Center, 1021 Mustang Drive in Bismarck. Friends and family are encouraged to stop by any time between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Interment will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at a later date.

We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the doctors and staff at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, along with the Good Samaritan Society/Sanford Health Hospice, for their care during his final days. We also wish to extend thanks to Harry's many family and friends for all their prayers and support.

I want to extend my deepest sympathy to everyone in Harry´s family including myself. I only got to really know him over the past ten or so years. We got to meet whenever he was in Arizona with Shiela and Bernard.
He told me many stories about my father, Oscar Enzi who passed when I was six years old. Those stories helped me know him better and I will be forever grateful . Harry had my father´s accordion and gave it to me a couple of years ago. That´s just a small example of how amazing and great a person Harry was. He was a kind and easy going soul and the world was a better place with him in it.

There is an old saying that you die twice. First when your soul leaves this earth. The second time is when your name is spoken for the last time. His name will be spoken as long as I am alive. I am confident that his name will be spoken for many generations to come by his large and wonderful generations of family.

Harry was my cousin and I am very fortunate and honored to have know him. He will truly be missed.

Uncle Harry was the nicest man I have ever met. I loved talking with him. He loved his family and even though we will miss him, we know he is with his beloved Shirley!!
