Jacob Larson Obituary

Jacob Larson

ALMONT - Jacob "Jake" Larson, 78, Almont, died June 1, 2009 at Medcenter One, Bismarck. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 5, at Sims Lutheran Church, Sims, with the Rev. Van Vechten Crane officiating. Burial will be in Sims Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, New Salem, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Jacob was born Feb. 16, 1931, southwest of Almont, the son of Thorvald and Lucille (Olin) Larson on the ranch where he lived his entire life. Raised in the area, he graduated from Almont High School and the third generation to own and operate the ranch homesteaded by his grandfather and dating back to 1882. He was united in marriage to Virginia Hauge on Nov. 10, 1957, at Almont.

Jake's life revolved around his land and cattle which allowed for a life style he and his family enjoyed and that few can even dream of. He was very proud of the fact that he was the first rancher in the nation to have a purebred black simmental heifer. Jake was also extremely well-read on anything concerning cattle, as well as American history. In 2007, his ranch, the TL Ranch, was inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Jake was a member of many organizations, including the N.D. Rodeo Association and the N.D. Stockmen's Association. He served on the board and was past president of the N.D. Simmental Association and also served on the board and as President of the Almont/Sims Lutheran Parish.

He is survived by the family he loved so dearly, including his wife, Virginia, Almont; his daughter, Julie (Craig) Nelson, Watford City; his sons, Jay (Tracy), Almont, and Joel (special friend, Angela Silva), Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his sisters, Dorothy (Jim) Holland, Edina, Minn., Joyce Middleton, Largo, Fla., Lois Van Beek, West Fargo, Adeline (Ted) Thiede, Bismarck, and Caroline Schwartz, Watford City.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Jamie Bauer.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jake was a very influential part of my life growing up. My cowboy hero so to speak. I will always cherish my memories of visiting with him and hearing his stories about how Almont was back in the day. I will never forget hunting with him when I was younger. Thinking of you all.

Ginny Dear~ Know how much my thoughts are with you and your family at this time. You and Jakey were always my favorite couple during my growing up years - I idolized you both! He was the perfect all around cowboy and you always the beautiful, soft spoken, illuminance strong woman that you are today! You two were always my link to my dad and grandpa's ties ... so many happy and fond memories of Almont. I will always be thankful for Jake's visit with my Mom during her final days at Missouri Slope. My love to you all, wishing I could be there physically, but know I am there spirtitually... love, Kirsten Olson Mason
