Melvin Mayer

GARRISON - Melvin Mayer, 82, formerly of Streeter, died Sept. 6, 2008, at the Benedictine Living Center, Garrison. Services will be at held at 1 p.m. Thursday Sept. 11, at the Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown, with the Rev. Bryce Tahran officiating. The interment will be made in St. Luke's Lutheran Cemetery, Streeter.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Melvin was born July 25, 1926, on the family farm in Neudorf Township, S.E. of Streeter. He received his elementary education in the local rural school and grew to manhood in the vicinity where he helped on the family farm.

He and Violet Ruff were married June 20, 1948, in the First Congregational Church in Gackle. They made their home on the Mayer farm 4 ½ miles southeast of Streeter. They farmed until 1975, when they moved to Jamestown. While living in Jamestown, they both worked at Central Dakota Nursing Home. Following their retirement, they took several trips throughout the United States and Canada. They also purchased a rug loom and started making rugs and attending craft fairs. In 1998, they moved to Bismarck, and continued to stay busy making rugs. Following the death of his wife May 4, 2001, he continued to reside in Bismarck until May of 2008, when he entered the Prairie View Nursing Home in Underwood, until July of 2008, when he moved to the Benedictine Living Center in Garrison.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown, was very active on the church council, Sunday School and also the Lutheran Brotherhood.

He is survived by his three daughters, Gloria (Dennis) Martin, Bismarck, Colette (John) Thomack, Frederick, Md., and Rachel (Steve) Schmidt, Bismarck; seven grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Edna (Raymond) Wetzel, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Milbert.
