Roy W. Prestrude

VALLEY CITY -- Roy W. Prestrude, 83, Valley City and formerly of Kathryn, died June 16, 1998, in a Valley City hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kathryn, with the Rev. Bradley Edin officiating. Burial will be in Waldheim Cemetery, near Kathryn, with full military rites provided by Peterson-Swenson American Legion Post No. 83, Nome.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. today, at Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Roy Willard Prestrude was born April 10, 1915, in Eastedge, the son of Martin and Hannah (Mjoen) Prestrude. He grew up and attended school in Eastedge. After his schooling, Roy worked at the Devils Lake Creamery and Hatchery. He joined the United States Army on April 10, 1942, serving in the Philippines during World War II. Roy was discharged Nov. 30, 1945.

Roy married Helen Severson on March 3, 1946 in Valley City. They owned and operated the Prestrude Johnson Store in Eastedge and later moved to Kathryn, where they farmed. Roy was the rural mail carrier in Kathryn from 1951 to 1982. Helen died April 28, 1991. Roy moved to Valley City in 1997.

Roy was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Valley City Troubadour's, Leslie Neumann V.F.W. Post No. 9315, Litchville; the Peterson-Swenson American Legion Post 83, Nome; the Valley City Eagles Club; Sons of Norway; and the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association.

Roy is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lynette, Kaysville, Utah; four daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Charles Wendel, Kathryn, Becky and Darrel Salberg, Gwinner, Mary and Victor Friesz, Mandan, and Elise and John Miller, Valley City; one brother, Alfred and one sister, Gladys Johnson, both of Valley City; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; an infant son, Roy Willard Jr.; and a sister, Alice Nelson. (Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City)
