Deneen Fendig Obituary

FLAT ROCK - Deneen Fendig passed away peacefully April 3, 2013, at Elizabeth House Hospice Center near Hendersonville. She was born on June 21, 1947, in Brunswick, Ga. to parents Gladys Gowen Fendig and Albert Fendig Sr.
Deneen spent her childhood on St. Simons Island and developed her love for nature among the moss covered oaks and the marshes of Glynn. She enjoyed her extensive travels with her Mother and Father, the love of her brothers and sister, and wonderful times spent with caregivers, Nursie and James.
Deneen is survived by her sister, Jane; brothers, Jimmy and Albert; brother-in-law, Smitty; sisters-in-law, Ann and Joyce; daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and sons, Duncan and Jeff.
Later in life she began spending time in the mountains of North Carolina, raising her two sons, Jeff and Duncan, pursuing post-graduate work in psychology and working as a clinical therapist. Her approach to therapy drew from many sources and her primary goal in life was to help those in need.
During the last decade, Little Cumberland Island became an integral part of her life. She grew lemons, combed the beach for artifacts and became as much a part of the island as the sand dunes and the terns she loved. She was a fierce protector of the wild horses, turtles, birds and the natural beauty of the Island.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, at Christ Church on St. Simons Island.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Four Seasons Hospice so that other patients and their families can be cared for as wonderfully as she was in her final weeks. Donations can be made at www.deneenfendig.com or by check made out to Four Seasons Hospice and mailed to 10619 Oliver St., Fairfax, Va. 22030.

I personally never met Deneen, but I recently listened to the podcast she had with her son Duncan when she was in the active stage of dying...and I must say that it was the most beautiful, comforting, and loving conversation I have ever listened to.

My mother was a very loving and kind woman who had a very similar essence to Deneen. Very intelligent, generous, and loving all around. She sadly died by suicide due to a very troubling and difficult personal life coupled up with the inability to be authentic with her emotions due issues that stemmed from childhood.

Anyways because she died in such an abrupt and tragic way I never got to have a final goodbye or thank you for being the best mom of all time. She was so much more than her suicide.

Deneen, I just wanted to say thank you for the secondhand closer the conversation with your son brought me. It was so incredible and authentic, and I just wanted to say thank you for that gift.

I never met Deneen but I'm sure her son captured her essence well on his show Midnight Gospel. I couldn't help but from tearing up as the last scene where Duncan and his mom as planets, fade into this black hole as they discuss the perpetuating love that they have for each other. It's that kind of warmth that you can feel the screen. I lost my grandfather recently. It's been strange because we haven't been able to leave the house to have a service for him in any way. The quarantine is kind of numbing and I just expect to see him the next time I leave the house. This show is starting to help me come to grips that he is gone. Don't resist the flow of the river. Don't climb up the embankment and get bit by weasels and stung by bees. Not just with my grandfather but for that river that is reality as well. So Deneen, from what I've read about you and from what I've heard you say, you are a human being who profoundly comforted many people and many more to come.

I am what you would call a stranger. I've never met Deneen, but have recently watched her son's show Midnight Gospel which she was featured on. I found out my great aunt passed away minutes before delving into the episode she so humbly stars in. I am grateful to her and Duncan for helping me move through my emotions and for sharing their perspectives on death and love. She so clearly was a wonderful presence, and my heart goes out to any and all who have been influenced by her.

This is Gary Becker. I graduated from Glen Academy in 1965 and Billy Brewer contacted me concerning high school reminiscing groups he has formed which reminded me that over the years I have wanted to locate Deneen. Deneen was my first love and I was extremely sad to find out just now that she is gone. She was every wonderful thing you could say about her. I know you miss her as I have for about 50 years.

Deneen was my youngest Sister and enjoyed being different in many ways from the rest of us old stodgy siblings. She was full of love and loved being loved. She loved nature and from whence it came from. She "marched by her own drumbeat" and I am sure that her Spirit is now dancing, pain free, in the heavens and trying to convince God that she was right.
We will miss her uniqueness and spunk and love her dearly!
