Joseph Junkin Obituary

Joseph (Joe) Swan Junkin, died peacefully from pulmonary fibrosis on March 29, 2025, with his loving family by his side. Born on June 17, 1939, Joe lived a rich and fulfilling life that touched many around him. He was a devoted family man, accomplished executive and passionate adventurer.

Joe grew up in New York and attended the Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, where he later served as a trustee. His academic journey continued at Harvard University, where he forged lifelong friendships, and then went on to earn his MBA from Harvard Business School.

In 1962, Joe married Sara A. Caldwell (Toni), who passed away in 2016. Together they raised three sons-Robert, Joseph, and Angus-initially in Bedford, New York, before settling in Weston, Massachusetts. Joe was deeply involved in his community, serving on the Weston town finance committee for many years. He was a long term member of the Weston Golf Club and later The Country Club.

Joe's professional life began on Wall Street as an investment banker with several firms including Smith Barney and Robert Fleming. He later transitioned to industry, joining California Products in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he rose to the position of CEO and left a lasting impact on the company.

An avid outdoorsman, Joe found great enjoyment in hiking in the Adirondacks, as well as fly fishing and hunting trips, especially when shared with family and friends. He also cherished traveling the world with his beloved wife, Toni, exploring the history and arts of every far off destination. After retiring to Boca Grande, Florida, Joe indulged his other loves of gardening and genealogy and delighted in visits from his eight grandchildren. Joe could be found many afternoons with his corgi, Buffet, at the local dog park, or chatting outside Hudson's grocery, the library, or stealthily assisting with the thinning of the iguana population.

Later in life, Joe discovered love once more and married Bryn Madden of Weston, Massachusetts. He adored Bryn, her children John and Nicholas, and her six grandchildren, embracing them as his own.

Joe's friends, colleagues and family knew he was especially scrappy, determined and a unique mix of that hard-nosed nature with a big generous heart and broad intellectual curiosity; the kind of guy who enjoyed an afternoon of art appreciation in Italy and then fought off a mugger the same night. This unique blend of traits made him a successful businessman but also an adoring husband and father and presence in the community.

He is survived by his wife, Bryn; his three sons, Robert, Joseph, Angus and their wives Beth, Laura and Jennifer; Bryn's children John and Nicholas, and their wives Darci and Katharine; and fourteen cherished grandchildren.

Joe's legacy of love, leadership, and curiosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. A celebration of Joe's life will take place at a later date.

Donations to Joe's memory can be made to the Boca Grande Health Clinic Foundation at P.O. Box 2340, Boca Grande, FL 33921 or https://bghcfoundation.com/donate-now. Or a charity of your choice.

Dear Bryn,
Jane and I are so sorry to read about Joe´s passing. We always delighted in seeing him in the Adirondacks or in Boston. He was someone that I looked up to, perhaps because he was an upperclassmen at Middlesex but mostly because he was a kind and generous person. We are thinking of you and your family as your deal with his loss.

I feel blessed to have known Joe. He was full of funny stories - how he met Toni when she accidentally impaled his foot with her high heel at a party and he challenged her to dance with him; his terror of being driven around Chattanooga by Mother Cline, who really was a terrible driver, etc. he was always a gentleman and maintained his composure, even while contemplating his young life ending by Mother Cline driving over the sidewalk and nearly into a large statue. He was smart, patient, kind, considerate and handsome.
