Jo Ann Hubbard Kuhrt, 93, of Lubbock, Texas, quietly and peacefully passed from this earth to
heaven while surrounded by her children in her family's home, Monday, April 1, 2024.
Jo Ann was born Monday, February 23, 1931 in
Crane, Texas to Delbert Hershel Hubbard and
Evelyn Hubbard. As an only child, a redhead and Irish descent she was a spirited, strong woman
with a direct manner but also extremely loving and devoted to others. Her father's job with Phillips
66 led the family to Phillips, TX in 1940 where she became a proud, lifelong Phillips Blackhawk.
She graduated from Phillips High School in 1948 and attended Texas Tech University for 2 years,
followed by 1 year at Denver University in
Denver, CO.She married Harry Lugene Kuhrt on December 27, 1950 at 1st Baptist Church in Phillips, TX,
then immediately moved to
Denver, CO and joined Harry attending Denver University where she
studied Speech. Throughout her life, she worked a variety of jobs and was active in her church
and community, including PTA, Lion's Club, 20th Century, Phillips Alumni and election poll
worker. She loved Frank Phillips College, often attending events and hosting students in her home.
She and Harry also provided temporary foster care, pouring love into a number of children. In
her own words, "My greatest happiness was being a wife for 61 years, a mother, a grandmother
and a great-grandmother... the joy of being a Christian, blessed by teaching young people, young
couples and singing in the choir!" Jo Ann was faithful to God and the church, teaching Sunday
school classes at Phillips 1st Baptist Church then Fairlanes Baptist Church into her nineties. A
lifelong sports fan, she avidly cheered for her kids, grandchildren and favorite college and
professional teams, especially Texas Tech and the Dallas Cowboys. Football and basketball were
her favorite sports but she watched baseball, track, tennis, golf, volleyball, soccer and especially the
Olympics. Jo Ann was an extremely engaged, vocal and animated sports fan, offering much
coaching advice from her favorite recliner. Some of her favorite memories were family fishing trips
to Tucker Ponds in South Fork, CO and Monument Lake, CO where she skillfully navigated
rowboats to catch many trout. Her love for her family, community, church, nation and God were
undeniable; spending much time in daily Bible study and prayer. Her great sense of humor,
laughter and welcoming smile will be fondly remembered. To all her friends over the past 9
decades, both lifelong and most recently at Raider Ranch in Lubbock, know that you were
treasured by her.
