Larry Shaffer was born on January 23, 1941, in
Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Elbert and Mary Joe Shaffer. He was raised alongside one sister, Marcia, and learned early the values of grit, loyalty, and hard work that would guide him throughout his life.
On March 18, 1958, he married the love of his life, Pat Howard. In 1959, they moved to
Borger, Texas, where they built a life centered on family and perseverance. Together, they raised two daughters, Kathy and Cyndy, who were a constant source of pride and joy.
A lifelong car enthusiast and dedicated businessman, he owned and operated S&M Automotive for 34 years. He left a legacy of integrity and prosperity that has remained, even after his retirement. His work was never just a job-it was a calling. He loved all things cars, believed deeply in hard work, and lived by the philosophy of working hard and playing even harder.
Beyond his career, he was an adventurer at heart. He built a cherished cabin in Eagle Nest, New Mexico, a place that became a gathering spot for rest, laughter, and lasting memories. He took several cross-country motorcycle trips and shared his love of travel and adventure by taking his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on numerous vacations, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
He also found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved classic Westerns and good music.
He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened-even if he didn't (or couldn't) himself. His quiet wisdom, dry humor, and steady presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
From two children, he built a loving family of five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. His legacy lives on through them, in stories told, lessons learned, and the deep love he had for his family.
He passed peacefully on December 17 at his home, quite literally surrounded by the family he loved so deeply. As he entered eternity, he was welcomed home by his beloved daughter, Cyndy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest daughter Cyndy.
He is survived by his wife Pat. Daughter Kathy Hamm and husband Lee. Grandchildren Nikki Stanford and husband Kris, Ashly Skelton and husband Seth, Colton Saxon and Tiffany, Chase Saxon and wife Megan, and Heather Collom. Great Grandchildren Taylor, Anyssa, Brynn, Lukas, Austin, Kylee, Camden, Jaden, Cylin, Sawyer, Sam, Luckasey, Reiny, and Dally and Great Great granddaughter Sienna, who made 5 generations in June 2025. His sister Marcia McMichael, a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. And finally, his best canine companion, Ally.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Funeral services will be held January 10th, 2026 at 1:00 at Celebration Family Church in Fritch, Tx.
Blessed is the man who remain steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.
