William L. Schaffer (August 8, 1954 – March 24, 2026) William L. “Bill” Schaffer, 71, of West Chester, passed away on March 24, 2026, at Chester County Penn Medicine after a lengthy illness. Born in Darby, PA and raised in Broomall, Bill was a proud member of Marple-Newtown High School’s Class of 1973. He went on to serve three years in the U.S. Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1975. Bill moved through the world with energy, curiosity, and a strong sense of who he was. He loved staying active—running, biking, working out—and had a deep appreciation for music, especially jazz. He loved to dance and did it well. Some of his happiest times were spent sailing on the Sassafras River in Maryland and on the bay in Stone Harbor, NJ—places where he felt both freedom and peace. After retiring from Omni Cable in 2009 due to health challenges, Bill continued to stay engaged with the world around him. He was someone who could start a conversation anywhere—and often did. Grocery stores, sidewalks, wherever he happened to be, were all fair game. He enjoyed a good debate and didn’t shy away from it. If you talked with Bill, you knew you were going to get his honest thoughts—and probably be invited to think a little harder yourself. Bill didn’t just pass through conversations—he showed up in them. He was a loyal Philadelphia sports fan, especially when it came to the Eagles, and he found meaningful connection and personal growth through his involvement with the 307 Club. That community mattered to him. It was a place where he could be both supported and challenged, and where connection ran deeper than surface-level conversation. Family was central to Bill’s life. He cared deeply about his siblings and worked, in his own way, to keep everyone connected. He looked out for them, encouraged closeness, and carried a quiet sense of responsibility for those relationships. With his remarkable memory, he was the one people turned to when stories needed telling or settling—he remembered the details that mattered. Bill also knew loss, and he carried it with him. He deeply missed his dear friends, Bobby and Florine—losses that stayed close to his heart. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Peggy Schaffer. He is survived by his siblings, Marji (Ron), Carol (Jeff), Lisa (Michael), and Gregg; his niece Becky (Nathan); and his nephews Adam (Kara) and David. Bill will be remembered for his presence—his voice in conversation, his strong opinions, his loyalty, and the way he engaged with the people around him. He left an imprint not through grand gestures, but through the many everyday moments where he chose to connect. Bill had a way of meeting people right where they were—and making the moment matter. In accordance with Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private memorial will be held by the family at a future date. Memorial donations may be sent to …
