ALAN M. WHITE

1926 - 2017

WHITE, Alan, M. 90 of Boxborough died on January 2, 2017 at age 90 in his home and surrounded by his family.. White was born on July 1, 1926 in Medford, Massachusetts to Sara Rosenberg White and Louis White. Alan started life as a child of the great depression, moving to many locations, but always with a loving family led by his mother Sara. Alan completed his senior year of high school in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1944. He then enlisted in the army during WW2 and would have been in the Japan invasion force had the war not ended when it did. He instead served in the German occupation. With the help of the GI Bill he earned a degree at Boston University. Alan married in 1950 and went on to have a successful career in education, first as a math teacher, then principal at Lilja Elementary in Natick, MA from 1956-1967. He then became the Assistant/Acting Superintendent for the Acton-Boxborough Regional School system from 1968-1973. He earned his Masters Degree in education at BU along the way. Disillusioned by the educational system he then began a new career as a residential home builder in the mid-1970's where he proudly launched the careers of his three son's, each in various aspects of the construction industry. During his construction career Alan employed many people over the years in the building of custom homes in the Lincoln, Weston, Concord and later in the Worcester area. Alan was also extremely proud of his many years of involvement in the Sudbury Valley School in Framingham that grew into an internationally recognized alternative education model. He is survived by his younger brother Burton of Tigard, OR, former wife Elinor (Silverman) White of Lincoln, MA, his three sons: Mark and wife Pascale of Boxborough with whom he lived the last 20 years of his life, Steve and wife Cathy of W. Charleston, WV and Larry and companion Cyndy Pokalny, also of Boxborough, MA. Alan also had four grandchildren Sasha, Andy, Emily and Ben of whom he was enormously proud. A private service will be held. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Sudbury Valley School, 2 Winch Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
