Alice Canaday Obituary

CANADAY, Alice (Gregson) of Lexington, formerly of Belmont, MA and New London, NH. Sept. 24, 2008. Age 87. Beloved wife of Wilbur D. Canaday, Jr., mother of Peter G. Canaday of Dakota Dunes, SD and John H. Canaday, Cos Cob, CT. Devoted grandmother of Miles and Brooks Canaday of Cos Cob, CT, and Rachel and Nathan Canaday of Broomfield, CO. Graduate of Smith College '43 and Yale School of Music '45. Piano faculty at the New England Conservatory, Boston and The Rivers School, Weston, for many years. Published author of "Contemporary Music and the Pianist." Radcliffe Institute Fellow, 1961-62. Bunting Institute Fellow, Radcliffe, 1971-72. Former President, New England Piano Teachers Association, 1985-87. Memorial Service to be held at the First Church of Belmont, Unitarian/Universalist, 404 Concord Avenue, Belmont Center, Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6:00pm with reception to follow. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alice Canaday Endowed Scholarship, New England Conservatory of Music, contact Susan Sandrof, Director of Stewardship, 617-585-1169. I had always felt that if it weren't for Alice Canaday, I never would have been prepared for a career in music. I have felt gratitude for her patience and toughness with me back then, all these years. Please, accept my condolences. She was a wonderful musician and person!

Bill: Mabel joins me in expressing our deep sympathy to you and your family. We have so many happy memories of Alice's years at PACC, especially the Sunday mornings when she had to take over the duties of the organist on short notice.
