PEARLMUTTER, Alvin Age 86, formerly of Sharon and Easton, died on January 10, 2017 at NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham. Mr. Pearlmutter grew up and attended North Quincy High School and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree at Boston University. He served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Pearlmutter was an influential and devoted educator. He retired from Foxborough High School in 1992 after 36 years of service, culminating as Chairman of the Social Studies department for the latter part of his career. He was responsible for the creation, organization, and implementation of a new curriculum for the high school which was praised by the North East Regional Conference on Social Studies and was shared and adopted in school systems throughout Massachusetts.

The National Honor Society of Secondary Schools inducted Mr. Pearlmutter as a member based on his scholarship, leadership, character, and service. In 1990 then-Governor Bill Weld acknowledged his receiving the coveted Bill Spratt Most Valuable Professional Award.

He also served as Chairman of the State's Democratic Town Committee in Sharon for several years.

His kids and grandkids were his best students and his pride and joy. He was an avid hiker, loved the outdoors, and in retirement he served as a mediator for the state court system. He was an elegant dancer and could be seen twirling around Ruth, the love of his life. He was exceptionally charming in his ability to make others feel important through his warm, welcoming and engaging demeanor.

He is survived by three sons, Gary (Lori) of Flagstaff, Arizona, Mark (Madeline) of Brookline, Massachusetts, and Bernie (Kim) of Tampa, Florida and a daughter Leslie Botting of Mansfield, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren: Rachel Lagasse, Jonathan and Richard Botting , Samantha and Jessica Gonnelly, Andrew, Cameron and Alexandra Pearlmutter, Joshua and Hannah Pearlmutter, and Benjamin and Jacqueline Pearlmutter, and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth and his daughter, Sandra Gonnelly.

His funeral will be at 12:00 noon on Sunday, January 15th, at Schlossberg Solomon Chapel, 824 Washington Street in Canton, Massachusetts followed by burial with an honor guard.

Please join family and friends at 440 Boylston Street, Brookline between the hours of 3:30PM and 9 PM after the burial.

I'm not sure if this page is still active but I wanted to write something for Mr. Pearlmutter. I just heard on TV a commentator mentioning his most influential teacher and that we should all reach out to ours. Mr. Pearlmutter was mine at Foxboro High School in the 60's. He was my best teacher because he listened, encouraged and simply made learning so interesting. He developed a life long passion for politics and our government in me that lives to this day. I can still see his smile.
His children and grandchildren should know he is thought of by a grateful student of his to this day.

Mr. Pearlmutter was one of the finest teachers I have ever known. He had the ability to engage and challenge his students in ways that made his class one that I looked forward to everyday. I learned much from him as he was such a great communicator. I have never forgotten his trademark gestures representing the system of "checks and balances" and other political concepts. I even used his class notes with great success in my political science classes in college.
Without doubt he had a great and positive influence on me and hundreds and hundreds of other Foxboro High School students.

Mr. Pearlmutter was a truly influential teacher. I'll never forget our project on "How a Bill Becomes a Law" early in our Civics class. He was demanding but encouraging and kind--a wonderful man of dry wit and a passion for justice, an exemplary citizen and State representative. It was like him to remember the Foxboro High Class of 1964 by showing up to be with us at our 25th Reunion in 1989. It was great to see him again!

Wonderful memories. Al was a friend of my husband Al Stewart and soon became a friend of mine. We enjoyed so many, many great times with Al and Ruth. From the mountains of New Hampshire to the beaches in Ft. Myers. His dedication to his friends was amazing. Always supporting us no matter what we were going through -- good times and bad times. I am so grateful to God that I was inspired to visit him the Sunday before he went to his eternal rest. We had a delightful visit and he was so happy to see me. I shall never forget the smile and welcoming that I received. My deepest sympathy to his family and I pray they treasure the happy memories they have as I treasure mine. We were all so privileged to be a part of his life.

Al was a teacher 6months ahead of me at FHs we were in rooms side by side. I learned much from Al that year. 19 years later I returned as principal and Al was an outstanding leader of social studies department his wisdom I always looked for.
