ARTHUR EPSTEIN Obituary

EPSTEIN, Arthur J. Of Boca Raton, FL, 86 yrs, passed peacefully on May 21, 2023. Arthur grew up in Malden, MA and married his high school sweetheart, Eunice (Sandler) z"l, in 1958. They began their married life in Peabody before settling in Marblehead, where they raised their three children, Julie, Lauren and Jonathan. While in high school, Arthur worked in his father's Wakefield factory, Mystic Enterprises. After his father passed when Arthur was sixteen, he took on more responsibilities at Mystic. He began his career with Midas Muffler in 1965, when a friend of his mother offered him the opportunity to buy his Malden Midas shop. Eventually Arthur became the second largest franchise owner in the country. In recent years, Arthur focused much of his attention on philanthropy. His particular but not exclusive areas of interest were Jewish education and mental health. In 2017, the Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead was renamed the Epstein Hillel School in recognition of his very generous gift. In memory of his late wife, Eunice, who suffered with bipolar disorder for most of her adult life, he created The Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, a 120-bed unit caring for adults and children at North Shore Medical Center in Salem, MA. He also prided himself on supporting young entrepreneurs pursuing their passions. He invested in people and enjoyed seeing them flourish. Arthur is survived by his wife, Bryna Litchman; as well as his children, Julie and JB Nadal, Lauren and Mark Rubin and Linn and Jonathan Epstein. Most dear to his heart were his six grandchildren, Jake, Grace, Zoe, Amy, Mathias and Noah, his "three kings and three queens", whom he boasted about at every opportunity. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2023, 11 am, at Congregation Shirat Hayam of the North Shore, 55 Atlantic Ave., Swampscott, MA. Burial will follow at Shirat Hayam Cemetery 506 Lowell St., Peabody, MA. Shiva will be observed on Thursday, May 25th from 10-1PM at Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward Street, Newton, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Epstein Hillel School, 6 Community Rd., Marblehead, MA 01945.

Arthur and Eunice were the first friends we made when my late husband, Morty, brought me to Malden as his new bride.
It was Arthur who convinced us to buy the home in Peabody where I still live - up the street from theirs. I still smile when I remember this tall man with the wide smile car-pooling our children to Hebrew School in his tiny red Volkswagen.
Arthur was the essence of what a good human being is supposed to be - wise, kind, caring, charitable, good humored, and family-oriented.
It was our privilege to have been friends long ago and I send my warmest condolences to Bryna and his family..

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
I´m going to miss Arthur and our conversations and the advice he would give me during the time that I cared for him. I will also miss his humor, the both of of us would always joke around, and tell jokes that always keep a smile on his face, even when he didn´t have pleasant days . It saddens me that he´s gone, but I know he is now at peace.

I am saddened to hear about the death of my friend Arthur. I used to love seeing him walking around Marblehead neck with his friends Howard Rich, Knight Alexander and others. A friendly beep would always produce a wave and trademark smile, a smile that came easy to his face. Arthur had many friends of which i was privileged to be one. He lived his life with grace, dignity, humility and kindness. A great many benefited by his selfless works and very generous nature. I want his family to know that I care...he was quite a guy!!

I remember Arthur
Epstein from early in my career at Malden Trust Company. Truly one of the good guys. He commanded the attention of any room he walked into - in the best possible way. Devoted Family man and always philanthropic. Unforgettable man!

The Epstein family ,
I am deeply saddened to hear about Arthur´s passing. I grew up in Malden and lived directly across the street from Eunice who was my baby sitter for a few years before she married Arthur. I can still recall Arthur driving over to pick Eunice up.
Later on in life I saw Arthur many times at his Midas store in Malden and on the Lynnway .
I last saw Arthur at a gathering for the Lappin foundation board of directors at Bob´s son´s home in Beverly a few years ago . We reminisced about growing up in Malden. Arthur was an incredible man and his contribution to the educational and medical facilities that bear his name shall continue on in his memory. I´m proud to say I knew Arthur Epstein for practically my entire life.
May Arthur´s name and memory always be a blessing.
Sincerely,
Nate J. Lincoff
