MONCURE, Ashby Carter M.D. Born on December 27, 1934. Died August 22, 2021 under the care of hospice. He was born in Richmond, Virginia. Son of Powhatan and Maude Carley Moncure. Dr. Moncure entered the University of Virginia in 1953, and during his third year became a member of the Raven Society. He entered medical school in 1956, and was elected to the Medical Honorary Society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He graduated from medical school in 1960, and entered surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He served in the United States Army as a Captain from 1962-1964. Dr. Moncure completed his training as Chief Resident in Surgery at Massachusetts General in 1968. Dr. Moncure established a busy medical practice in thoracic and vascular surgery at M.G.H., over the remaining 35 years becoming Clinical Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Senior Surgeon at M.G.H. During this time, he authored or co-authored 125 scientific publications. An avid sports fan, he was team physician for the Boston Bruins Hockey Team for 34 consecutive seasons. Dr. Moncure served as president of the Boston Surgical Society; New England Surgical Society; and the Eastern Surgical Society. He was a fellow of The American Surgical Association; The American College of Surgeons; a member of The American Association of Thoracic Surgery; and The Society for Vascular Surgery. He moved to The Landings in Savannah, GA in 2011 where he lived with his wife Annie. Dr. Moncure was preceded in death by wives, Patricia Leighton Moncure and Margot Graham Moncure. Surviving is his wife, Annie Stanton Moncure of Savannah; three daughters, Diana Carley Moncure, Ann Marie Moncure-Decaen (Jeffrey), and Elizabeth Moncure Rowe; son, Ashby C. Moncure MD; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on September 3, 2021 at 1pm at Aquia Episcopal Church Cemetery, 2938 Jefferson Davis Highway, Stafford, VA 22554. I did not have the honour of meeting Ash Sr, but his history as a superb medical practitioner demonstrates the respect that I have for his life and person. As both my son and daughter are doctors here in England, I know full well the dedication, intelligence, diligence and hard work that it will have taken Ash Sr to have created such a long and successful career in medicine. I only met Dr. Moncure one time, but it was a memorable evening. During January break when I was an undergraduate at Umass I went to a Bruins game with him and his son. We talked at length and it was a great game and all around great evening. It seems like a lifetime ago, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.
