Born on February 24, 1935 to Agnese and Abramo Marchetti in Boccassuolo, a mountain village in northern Italy, Gus came to the United States as an eleven year old in 1946 after World War II with his mother and brother to join Abramo after being separated for eight years due to the war. Gus and his family lived in Wellesley, where he learned English, played sports and made lifelong friends at school and work. He met his wife, Sandy in high school in Wellesley; they married a year after graduation and moved into their home in Natick. Always a high achiever, Gus worked for relatives in construction and served for two years in the Army National Guard. He then enjoyed a 36-year career at F. Diehl & Son on Linden Street in Wellesley. Starting as a floor clerk, he retired as general manager of the hardware and garden departments. He spent a lengthy retirement going back and forth between Natick and a summer cottage in Mattapoisett, hosting and visiting family, traveling overseas with friends, and taking meticulous care of his house and yard.
