Ben: played on Hobart's first hockey team, & was a four year middie on the lacrosse team. In the summer of '65 he ran with the bulls in Pampalona. Classmate, friend, you'll be missed, but fondly remembered. As the author Willa Cather wrote: "The road is all, the end is nothing". Thanks for sharing part of the trip with us.

Ben was a very special friend. In those early years at Hobart he was so full of life and eager to have a good time with his friends. And yet his commitment to varsity lacrosse as middie was indeed admirable. I reconnected with Ben in 1998 when we moved to Mass. We enjoyed getting together for an annual lunch each November. I looked forward to his tales of fishing, hunting and boating, and especially heaing of the arduous chore of researching and writing his book. I will miss him, especially each November for lunch at the Vanilla Bean in Pomfret, CT.

Always a true friend at Hobart William Smith. Ben was the shy, quiet, handsome KA hockey player with that great smile. I can see him now walking down South Main Street from KA to history class. Our reconnecting at the reunion two years ago was very special. We were together most of that weekend. On Saturday evening Ben and I opened up talking for what seemed like hours on the back steps of Comstock House that rainy night. We planned to meet later that summer in either Narragansett or Mattapopisett but, somehow life got in the way. A missed opportunity I regret now. From hockey player to fly fisherman to writer, Ben was always a true gentleman. My condolences to his family and close friends.

Ben was my very first date at Hobart and William Smith. We reconnected at our 40th reunion where he clearly had a wonderful time. Since Ben was such an athlete, it was a surprise to learn he was writing and loving it! Many of us read his book on Marion Clignet and looked forward to the fishing book, a project he was so excited to do. Could he have written in his own voice of his own life? Perhaps in time he might have. My condolences to the extended Hovey family. I will miss Ben's shy, graceful presence at our next reunion. He was a much loved member of our HWS family.

I will never forget Ben's story about his older cousin Clarry (Pell) bullying him, even as he was teaching him to play ice hockey. I think Clarry, in his gruff way, looked out for Ben. And few men could wear a bow tie as well as Ben.

Very sad to get this news of Ben's death. I hadn't seen Ben in some time. I was fishing off the rocks in Narragansett myself just Sunday. So long my friend.

Simmy and I were much saddened to hear the news. Ben's kindness and thoughtfulness as well as his love for the Point will be greatly missed.

We will all miss you Ben. You were the Sr man on deck at WhaleRockPt. Your love of that land and those rocks and shores taught us all to stop look & listen.

I have been wanting to contact Charlie and Candy to tell them how saddened I was to learn that Ben is no longer going to be with us on the Point. This is a nice way to do it. Whenever I was there to take care of ailing parents or the sale of the Ruins, he was always the first to stop by (probably to get his tractor), to say hi and give me all the news. I am sorry he never got his house on the Point, but I hope we can provide him with a lovely memorial on the Rocks which he loved so much. Good by, Ben. I hope you have found the peace you didn't always have on this earth.
