Bernard Whitaker Obituary

Bernard LeRoy Whitaker, 85, of Athens, Georgia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 10, 2013. Bernie was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Versie Whitaker Groce and James Whitaker.
Bernie served in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He was a Scout Master, a member of Salem Lodge No. 289 Masonic Temple of Winston Salem, NC, a member of the Classic City Lions Club and a member of Tuckston United Methodist Church. Bernie enjoyed teaching people and in doing so taught many Sunday school classes, Bible study classes and he also called square dances for many years.
Mr. Whitaker is predeceased by his first wife, Carol Brandon Whitaker. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kathy Havener Whitaker, sons Dr. Russell Whitaker (Phyllis) of Anniston, AL; Wayne Whitaker of Athens, GA; daughter Vickie Whitaker Williams (Asa Z. "Bucky") of Waynesville, NC; son Adam W. Whitaker (Mauree) of Bishop, GA; daughters Rachel Whitaker Greenway (Richie Kuriger) of Watkinsville, GA and Elizabeth Whitaker Halloran (Shane) of Watkinsville, GA; eleven grandchildren, one great grandchild, multiple nieces and nephews and his brother, Thomas Edward Whitaker of Omaha, NE.
The celebration of Bernie's life will be held at Tuckston United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 13, 2013, at 3:00 p.m., with burial following at the church. The Reverends Bill Jackson and James Mooneyhan will officiate. The family will receive friends and family at a gathering at the church after the service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations are made to Hospice Advantage 2470 Daniel's Bridge Road Bldg 100, Suite 171 Athens, GA 30606.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the Hospice Advantage employees for their constant support, care, and kindness for the past 18 months, with a special thank you to Patsy Cruce for her loving attention. The family also wishes to acknowledge the outstanding love and care that his nephew, Zach Havener, showed in caring for Bernie for the past 18 months.

Kathy and family-
I am so sorry for the loss of Mr. Bernie. I remember visits with him when I was young when he visited my daddy on business. He was a special man that my family thought very highly of. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you say your goodbyes and in the days ahead.
