Betsy Gunzelmann had the wisdom of a mother, the insight of a teacher, the creative capacity of a research scholar, and the compassion of a true friend. Her presence was a power to reckon with whether in the Department of Psychology or the realm of life. Her insight into human motivation brought her to embrace the universe of others in caring fashion. Her heartfelt concern for teaching in our schools today drove the uncanny publication of seven books in as many years by an eminent publisher in the field. She was ahead of her time in illuminating questionable memes of American education. Beyond the standards of excellence Betsy attained professionally, her personal legacy will remain forever with family, colleagues and students. A conversation with Betsy left each of us something to think about, something to do to make life better. She was as serious as she was spontaneous. From a playful interest in Curious George to a lifelong passion for yard sales, Betsy personified that life is meant to be fun as well as purposeful. Betsy inspired us all to live well and to help others do so, too.

Adventurer -- If you got into Betsy's car, you could end up anywhere. She craved Boston, museums, ice cream and lobster rolls. She loved Wentworth by the Sea. Professional Driver -- Betsy loved to drive, especially on winding roads. At Christmastime, she, her boy, and a friend or two would go out to find the best Christmas displays, track a new-found deer, or listen to the crunch of snow under the tires. Sometimes she forgot to watch the road. Proud Professor -- Betsy thrived in her job. When she walked on campus, students would run up to discuss the exciting things they were learning through her. In summer, she and Matt would host her entire university department at her Hampton home with a cookout and beach time. Dedicated Writer -- Betsy thought deeply a great deal. Rowman & Littlefield, a major international book publisher, took a liking to her work. They published many books together. Devoted Dog Owner -- Betsy loved dogs, especially cute ones with lots of personality. If her vet advised medication for her sick dog and it failed, she had no fear of cutting the pill in half or doubling it. Whatever health choices she made, her dogs lived long lives. Treasured Friend -- Betsy was a master in loving and caring for friends. Friend sick? She would drive or fly long distances to help. Fence falling down? Betsy would shove in stones to prop up the fence. Depressed? Betsy with her can-do attitude brought that friend back with sound advice and action. Loving Mother -- Betsy used her friends, dogs, car and cleverly-decorated house to inspire her boy with excitement and creativity. When he went off to college, Betsy gasped, then bounced back with boundless pride in his accomplishments. Like his mom, Matt's greatest accomplishment was his huge array of loyal, fun-loving friends. And, did any mother ever love a son more than Betsy did? That was not possible.
