SCHOFIELD, Carl W., Jr. 89, of 31 Decatur St., Gloucester, passed away on May 25, 2018 due to cardiac arrest. He was born in Lawrence, the son of Carl W. Schofield Sr. and Muriel (Longbottom) Schofield, attended public schools in North Andover, and graduated from Norwich University in 1949 with a B.S. degree in chemistry. Later that year he began a career in the gas industry as a chemist at Lawrence Gas Company, eventually advancing into management positions, ultimately as President of North Shore Gas. He served in many professional and civic organizations, including the American Gas Association, American Chemical Association, Lynn Rotary Club, YMCA, Oxford Club and Chamber of Commerce. He served as trustee at Union Hospital and at Eastern Bank.
During the Korean War he served as a tank platoon leader in the Army, and later as a reserve officer, retiring with the rank of Captain.
Mr. Schofield enjoyed hiking (he climbed the Matterhorn in 1969), skiing, jogging, hunting, badminton, reading and poker. But his great passion was music. He played several instruments, but mainly piano. For many years he loved playing at ceremonies at the Gloucester Elks Club, where he was a member.
Pre-deceased by his wife, Ann (Marshall-Miller) Schofield, he leaves a son, John Schofield & his wife Julie of Salisbury, MD, a daughter, Linda Schofield and her husband Mark Deming of Simsbury, CT, a step-son, Jason Miller and his wife Lorraine of Hamilton, and a step-daughter, Beth Miller of Gloucester, MA. Carl also leaves two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. He loved and was proud of them all.
A memorial is being held for both Carl and his dear brother, George, who died a few months before him. The celebration of their lives will be at the Dalton Club, 95 State St., Newburyport at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 30th.
