CHARLES RIMMER Obituary

RIMMER, Charles Percy, Jr. Passed away peacefully at age 90, on May 30, 2017 in Exeter, NH. Born July 11, 1926 in Liverpool, England he was the son of Charles P. Rimmer and Dorothy Davis Rimmer. The family moved to Hamilton, MA in 1939 whereupon Charlie entered Groton School, graduating in 1944. After one semester at Harvard University he enlisted in the Army and spent two years in Berlin, Germany in the Army of Occupation after which he re-entered Harvard. He rowed on the Junior Varsity crew and was President of the Fly Club. He graduated in 1950, then joined the faculty at Groton School where he taught math for 24 years, eventually heading the Math department. He assumed many roles at Groton School, including dorm master, crew coach and college counselor. In 1953 Charlie married Clare Curtis, and for 21 years they were integral members of the Groton School community while raising their five children. In 1974 Charlie became the second headmaster of Pinegree School in South Hamilton, MA, retiring after eight rewarding years guiding the school through the early years of coeducation. In retirement the Rimmers moved to Manchester, MA for sixteen years, and then to Kennebunkport, ME for ten years. When Charlie became challenged from Alzheimers they made a final move to Riverwoods in Exeter NH, a continuing care retirement community. Charlie's unassuming, considerate manner highlighted his dedication to helping those around him, including family, students, colleagues and friends. He had a quiet demeanor, and possessed a strong, reliable and generous character. He contributed to each community where he lived, serving on numerous boards and committees involved with education and conservation, and serving as Senior Warden at St. Ann's Church, Kennebunkport, Me. His passions revolved around the outdoors, and included upland bird hunting and waterfowl hunting, fishing, sailing, and care taking his properties. He was a skilled woodworker and produced many fine pieces of furniture. Above all, Charlie was thoughtful, compassionate, and unfailingly gracious until the very end. Charlie is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Clare, and four children and their spouses: Christopher Rimmer (Leslie) of Norwich, VT, David Rimmer (Mary) of Newbury, MA, Mollie Hoopes (Tom) of Ipswich, MA and Andrew Rimmer (Tish) of Kennebunk, ME. His beloved daughter, Lisa, died in 1975. He leaves ten devoted and very beloved grandchildren. There will be a private graveside service in June at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA and a Memorial Service at St. Ann's Church, Kennebunkport, ME on August 7, 2017 at 11 AM. Brewitt Funeral Service, 14 Pine St., EXETER , NH is assisting the family. For more information, please visit www.brewittfuneralhome.com.

I know this is probably unwarranted, but I was thinking of Charlie tonight and didn't expect a good outcome to a search for his name. I just want to say that I feel I befriended Charlie, as did anyone who met him I suppose. Sorry Clare for your loss, for I believe it was great. I appreciate having known Charlie. Happy Trails.

Mr Rimmer was my favorite teacher at Pingree. When I need a password and there is a security question of "who was your favorite teacher?" My answer is "Mr. Rimmer". He was kind and patient. He also had class and presented himself professionally. I think of him often and wish you peace and love.

Sincere condolences to the family. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure in your heart and it lives forever. May the wonderful treasures fill your hearts with love and bring you peace, Hosea 13:14.
