CHARLES SWANSON Obituary

SWANSON, MD, Charles Andrew 68, of Boxford, passed on Monday evening, October 23, 2017, at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. Born in Reading on January 19, 1949, the son of the late Harold A. and Dorothy (Luce) Swanson, he attended Reading High School and completed his college at M.I.T. Following M.I.T. he attended Stanford School of Medicine and specialized in dermatology. He completed his dermatology residency through Brown University's affiliate Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital. He overcame his lifelong disability of Aspergers Syndrome to become a respected member of the medical community. His medical expertise as a diagnostician was appreciated by all those who knew him. As a Board Certified dermatologist, he went into private practice in 1980. Throughout his three year battle with cancer, he continued to provide ongoing care for his patients. His hobbies included hiking, botany and geology. His interest in gardening could be well appreciated by the manner in which plants were apparent in his office. He leaves behind his only sibling, Stephen J. Swanson of Reading, along with many caring friends and associates. Calling hours at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, will be Thursday, Oct. 26th, from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be private.

Dr. Swansen was a kind physician and a unique soul. I wish he was here today as my daughter needs a dermatologist and is having a problem finding a good one. May his memories and kindnesses bring peace to his family.

Dear Dr. Swanson, Thank you for your help over the years with my skin problems. You always gave me the right medicine, but mostly I was impressed with the fact that you dared to be a doctor in such a rigid profession that does not make it easy for those with the courage to live and practice with individuality. You did it and did it well in the face of many who may have been more provincial. I was not aware you were ill, however I know you left this world better than you found it. Thank you, Margaret

I first noticed little things he did like go out and wheel in patients himself, give out free tubes of products and tell me interesting info. I actually doubted him when he said my father had Scabies as it seemed impossible when he told me. I realized later he was 100% right and wrote him an apology. The medication helped him so much. He was a doctor from the old school and knew his profession better than most. I'll truly miss him.

We are late to get the news of Dr. Swanson's passing and are sad to hear of it. My adult daughter Julie was his patient. She has high functioning autism and though I did not know that Dr. Swanson had Aspergers, I sensed they had a connection and unspoken understanding of each other. She has asked why she has not seen him lately. He was always so kind and patient with her. He is sadly missed . Mary Morris

I had the honor of being an employee for Dr . Swanson years past. I recently found out of his passing and I'm very saddened by this. Dr Swanson was an incredible selfless man who cared deeply for everyone in his life. I would watch him through the day and I was amazed at his talent his kindness warm heartedness and the selfless image he portrayed. I'm very honored to have known him and he was told that by me before I moved forward for personal reasons. It was tough then to say goodbye and tough to see his passing. May you rest in peace Dr. Swanson until we meet again with the Lord. I will never forget your loving kindness and the wonderful selfless man you were. XO

It was my honor to be a patient of Dr. Swanson. He diagnosed a cancerous tumor on my back in March and worked diligently to arrange treatment for me at Dana Farber. I am shocked to hear of his death. Such a kind and caring man. May he Rest In Peace and know the peace he brought to others through his practice. May God hold him in the palm of his hand,

I walked into his office without an appointment on a Tuesday to have him look at a cyst or something the size of a dime on my forearm.
He was at lunch, but the office girls asked him to come out.
He looked at it and said it needed to be removed the sooner the better.
His appointment book was full at that time.
He said "What are you doing tomorrow.
I replied " It's the 4th of July Doc"
He said "Come to my office tomorrow and I will take care if it"
And he did .
Thanks Doc You are truly one of a kind.
