CHRISTINE TEMIN Obituary

TEMIN, Christine The prominent Boston-based art and dance journalist, Christine Temin, passed away on August 4, 2024. A prolific writer with a wide range of interests, she began contributing to the Boston Globe as dance critic in 1978, later joining the newspaper staff. She added the role of art critic in 1990, then left the Globe in 2005 to follow a freelance career. As the Globe art critic, she enlarged her beat to cover craft artists and design. As a dance critic at the Globe, she recorded the growth of the Boston Ballet under all five of its directors, from founder E. Virginia Williams, to Mikko Nissinen, the company's current leader. Her book, "Behind the Scenes at Boston Ballet" (University Press of Florida), was published in 2009. With boundless energy and vivid descriptions in hundreds of reviews, she supported the rise of the region's many contemporary dance troupes and covered the programs at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival each summer. In addition, she contributed articles to the Globe's At Home and Travel sections, to report on her many trips overseas. Christine was born in Worcester, MA on October 29, 1948 and grew up in Millbury, MA. She was the elder daughter of Judith (Nilson) and Arthur Woll. She began studying ballet at the age of 6, performing often throughout her childhood. She attended Millbury public schools, graduating from Millbury High in 1966, before entering Bryn Mawr College, where she received a degree in Art History. She attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina, where she received Masters degrees in both Art History and Dance (Choreography). After she began teaching dance at Middlebury College in Vermont, she met and married Marc Temin, who survives her. The couple moved to the Boston area for her husband to attend Harvard Law School. Christine taught ballet at Wellesley College and the Harvard Summer Dance Center before joining the Globe. In addition to her husband, Christine is survived by two sons, Jonathan Temin of Arlington, VA and Dr. Nathaniel Temin, a Boston area radiologist; her sister, Cynthia Woll of Los Angeles, CA; and grandchildren, Owen, Cameron and Claire. Contributions in Christine's memory may be made to the Boston Ballet.

I enjoyed working with Christine at The Boston Globe for many years as a colleague. No one worked harder than she did. She was fearless in her reviews and articles and also fiercely productive. When she was pregnant she turned out reviews on deadline right up to her due date. She was also a wonderful hostess to several reunions of retired staff like myself from the paper's Living and Arts departments. She gave deeply felt support to the region's artistic community.
