CHRISTOPHER PITT Obituary

PITT, Christopher S. Chris died peacefully, with his family at his side, on Christmas Eve, 2022. He was 71 years young. Chris was first diagnosed with cancer in December 2005, and enjoyed 10 years of life without experiencing significant challenges of the disease. That changed in 2016 when the cancer evolved, and he fought valiantly for another seven years, never giving in to his illness. Chris was a model for many as he continued to do things that others in his circumstance might have given up. He accepted and rose to meet each new challenge that came his way, always supported by family and friends. Born and raised in suburban Philadelphia, Chris graduated from Episcopal Academy in 1969. At the beginning of Covid, following his 50th high school reunion, Chris reconnected with his classmates, meeting virtually on a weekly basis. These meetings gave Chris great pleasure during a time of relative isolation. Chris graduated from Williams College in 1973 and Boston University Law School in 1976. While his educational opportunities and accomplishments were very important to him, Chris filled his life with activities that he truly loved. Chris was a choral singer and participated in many groups over the years. He was a member of Chorus pro Musica, where he met his wife, Dottie, Boston Cecilia, Oriana Consort, and his church choir for most of his life. Many knew him for his passion for the outdoors, specifically hiking; he hiked all 48 4,000 foot peaks in NH, and rim-to-rim in the Grand Canyon. His family vacations were spent on Squam Lake in NH, and later on Martha's Vineyard and Franconia, NH. Until he was no longer physically able, he played ultimate frisbee every Wednesday night and many weekends late into his life. Through these activities, he became closer to his family and ignited lifelong friendships, providing guidance and leadership throughout his experiences to all who participated. Chris practiced law at Robinson + Cole, LLP for close to 30 years, where his area of expertise was analyzing complex real estate title matters. While at Robinson + Cole, Chris was active in mentoring young lawyers and in the firm's pro bono efforts, especially immigration asylum cases. A member of the Real Estate Bar Association of Massachusetts, he served on its Board, as chair of its Title Standards Committee and as its President. In 2018, Chris received its, "Jon Davis, Service to the Profession Award." Chris was also a respected member of the Abstract Club. Chris is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dottie (née Dorothy Mead); his daughter, Louisa Connaughton and husband, Blaine; granddaughter, Elizabeth; his son, Philip Pitt; his daughter, Martha Fortin and husband, Chris; and granddaughter, Lucy; as well as his sisters and sister-in-law and their families: Polly Pitt Whiteside and Barbara Selden Lougée and husband, Lance; niece, Chandler; Nancy Pitt Sands and husband, Gordie; nephews, Zach and Alex; and Susan Mead and partner, Mike Perry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chris' memory to a charity of your choice. Visiting Hours with the family will be from 3:30-6:30pm, on January 10. A Celebration of Chris' Life will be held at 1:30pm, on January 11. Both of these events will take place at First Parish in Milton. We first met Chris and Dot at the Public House in Sturbridge, MA after the engagement of our son Blaine and their daughter Louisa. It was a joy to add to our family. Chris was a wonderful man and we are very sorry that the Pitt family lost their father so soon. Our hearts and prayers are with you.

I remember Chris from our years in the Williams Choral Society, where Chris was one year ahead of me. He was an enthusiastic bass who loved getting together with small groups to sing together. He was always generous and welcoming with his time, helping a nervous young underclassman like myself get introduced to the rest of the group. I reconnected with him many years later in the Boston choral scene, where he was the same friendly and gracious individual. I will surely miss him.

I worked with Chris for over forty years at the Boston law firm of Harrison & Maguire LLP and with the firm of Robinson & Cole LLP with which it subsequently merged. I was always much impressed by his range of skills, accomplishments and adventures, not only in his career but also as a musician and outdoorsman. Beyond those, however, but without in any way meaning to diminish them, I was deeply impressed by the courage and equanimity with which he met and, for many years overcame, the medical problems which confronted him. Chis was a genuinely decent person and a good guy.

Chris was a solid presence in the Bass section of Oriana and also the Choir Marshall, getting us on and off stage with grace, and other roles as well. I have missed him and will continue to miss him. His memory lives on in our hearts.
